What IS that noise ???

Just wondering. Anyone know what that noise is when docking, or approaching the grill ? It doesn't always happen, and it's not like the grinding sound that comes when you hit the grill or letterbox.

Kind of hard to describe, but it's quite loud, sort of metallic sound.....a bit like a steel cable thwacking, or a steel cable whipcrack.

Like I say, it doesn't happen that often, and I can't see that I've hit anything, but it nearly makes me jump off my chair when I hear it.

Just wondering, no biggie, no harm done, nothing bad :)

I don't know....,sorry. And I also don't know why the sun makes a whistling sound (Austin powers theme tune sound) when you fuel scoop.

I know that noise. It makes me jump too. Like a steel cable thwacking is how I would describe it too. No idea.

If it is a sharp crackling noise that is the sound of shields scraping on something, it might be an NPC stuck under the bars or grinding on the wall or it's your ship lol

It makes a whoosing sound to let the pilot know his proximity to the sun or that he is fuel scooping, all the sounds are simulated by your systems to give you information on the environment, otherwise it would be a very quiet game lol

+1 for asking. I've wondered and never thought to ask.

What's that, there's only one stupid question, the one you don't ask!

The "whistling" near stars: it's been nagging me since Day One that it has something to do with those guys who have recorded stellar radio emissions and changed the frequency to be within human audible range.

Anyone know?

It is another ship coming out of supercruise or entering supercruise somewhere nearby, I think.

Some of the noise when entering the letterbox is probably the interaction of your shields with the airlock sheilds that keeps the air inside the station. The grid also may cause a noise because of the field it generates to gently steer you towards the centre of the letterbox.

You probably sandwiched some poor station maintenance guy workin on the grill. All good, full speed ahead.

Sometimes you can see the frameshift wake on the scanner just after the noise if the ship went into SC. If incoming, you might notice the new contact.

You mean this?

(It takes a couple of minutes until you really hear something. The sound is barely audible at the beginning.)

Thanks guys. I can now dock with my fevered imagination running wild. I particularly like the thought of the squished maintenance guy. Perhaps the noise is the twang of his safety cable breaking as he floats off into space, a mass of throbbing, irradiated flesh. But probably more likely the SC exit of another ship LOL.

Well, I'm not sure but I did notice a funny noise when I accidentally hit boost on final approach to the docking entrance last night. It was like the sound of ripping fabric but wetter, and it smelled. Weird.?
