I heard that once when I came out of hypercruise and saw two stars zooming towards me and then immediately again when I rotated to see another one 20ls away. I keep a bucket under the chair now.

I'd bet it's more or less exactly that.
Sometimes when in SC I hear thunder.
That was your underwear giving out......
I hear it 90% of the time in my Type-9......It's almost the sound a bullet makes when it whips past your head, just a wee bitty softer. Happens on approach to the letterbox when passing the advert boards. Be damned if I know what it is though as there is nothing in the vicinity.

I actually thought it was static electricity...... If you hit the grid sparks fly everywhere.....
