What is the best Voice Attack profile to use with E:D?

What is the best Vocal Response Compilation to use with E:D?

*Please ignore the question, what I mean't to ask was 'What is the best Vocal Response Compilation to use.'

Hey guys,

Just purchased the Voice Attack software as I've seen some awesome ways it's been used (The little things, like thanking your computer and having a spoken response from it).
When I checked online for a Vocal Response Compilation though, I noticed there wasn't a definitive E.D VRC, in fact, it appeared there's actually quite a few to choose from.

I'm hoping this forum might be able to help me choose what is considered the best for E.D. :)

Thanks for the help!

"Best" is an interesting word. The thing is with a profile it needs to work for you and by that I mean that it needs to work with your style of flying, your devices (HOTAS vs stick vs mouse & keyboard etc) and the way you talk.

I've seen some profiles that have trigger phrases that I would never think to use - I just don't talk that way.

So- what methods of control are you using and what's the main role you like to play in game? That might point someone with a similar set-up and style in your direction.

The best profile will be the one that you write yourself?

But if you're looking for ideas then I think Fireytoad has his VA profile linked below his twitch stream as do I on my own.

My twitch is linked in my sig... Feel free to pilfer. :D

I think most ppl make their own, command are not difficult to put together, in fact they'd take almost as much time to edit to meet your need that to just create from scratch.

Welcome to forums.

Yes, simply speaking most people need to set up their own VA profile because most people have key bindings customised, to whatever set up (joystick, favourite buttons) used.

There is some support for elite dangerous with voice attack though (link) which should give you an idea on how to set things up (and have your ship talkback to you, confirming Voice Attacl commands ...)

Good luck Cmdr!

Apologies, I have actually just bought the game (Downloading now) as I wanted to start when I received my joystick and throttle.

I suppose what I actually should be asking is which Vocal Response Compilation is the best (for some reason, I assumed that was a 'profile' :S )

My peripheral for flying is the Thrustermaster Hotas Warthog JS & Throttle.
As for role, at the moment I'm between smuggler and bounty hunter, though that may change with more gameplay.

So just to reiterate, I'm wondering what the best Vocal Response Compilation is to use in conjunction with E.D and Voice attack.

Thanks again guys.

After sorting out my own profile I wasn't too happy with the voices I could get. Some were good but the ai speech always has a sort of stiltifying sound to me. So I got a pack of pre-recorded wav files and I find them so much nicer. Admittedly they were 3$ but there were 700 wave files that could be used in both ED and SC.

Instead of writing what you wish your voice attack programme to say with built in voices, you refer to a pre-recorded wave file that is a natural recording.

This gives a natural voice reply rather than an AI version with wrong inflections.

With 700 choices for different commands there is plenty of choice.

It is just as easy as writing a reply.

Anyway if you want to go there and see for yourself you can find them at
http://vrcompilations.com/female-voice-sample-pack/

I have no link to these people other than I use the product and it does add well to immersion.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. :D

I've noticed there are a few to choose from online though, would you say this is the best in terms of a 'realistic AI computer voice' so to speak? :)

As others say the best profile is definitely the one you make for yourself. You can take ideas from other people's profiles, but ultimately you'll be the one deciding which commands you need on voice command, what exact words you use to invoke them, and the kind of vocal response you get.

Some people like their VA assistant to crack jokes and make remarks, personnally I just find this very awkward with the stiff and monotone TTS voices. My assistant is always concise and professional :p

Things to consider when making your own profile :

- As a general rule, make commands simple, not too short, not too long. Too short and you might trigger them by accident, too long and you'll waste time when in an emergency. Two words usually do it. Avoid commands like "boost"... some players have lost their ship by triggering it accidentaly inside a station.

- Play the game, and see what phrases pop up in your mind when you want to activate a certain command. Then add those to your profile. For example I find it really cool to say "let's get out of here" and have the ship initiate the frameshift drive!

- Remember you can use the ";" to make several possible inputs for the same command in the "When I say" field. For example you can write : "deploy weapons ; deploy hardpoints ; weapons free". Say any of these things and VA will recognize them. The more you put in, the more natural the interaction will feel. I have like 10 different commands to activate the frameshift.

- You can also use the ";" in the "say womething with text to speech" window, so that every time you trigger the command, you get a different answer, picked randomly between all the ones you've chosen for the action.

- To add some flavor, you can create separate commands for the same button when they are toggles. For example when I say "gear down", VA answers "landing gear deployed", when I say "gear up" she says "landing gear retracted". They're two different commands which both simply press the landing gear button.

- One thing I haven't tried yet as I play in solo only (due to connection difficulties) but definitely want to try, is create a macro that will send another player a pre-baked text comm. Like if I target someone, open voice comms, and say "send pirate warning", VA will input the successive letters to write "drop your cargo or be dead", then press enter. This way you could prepare several comm interactions, without having to type them all. Useful when your hands are on a HOTAS or for those using a Rift!

- Remember the game already has an integrated voice for certain actions, like activating the frameshift drive or deploying the cargo scoop. So no need to create a TTS answer for those commands unless you want to hear your TTS voice and the ship computer's voice saying the same thing at the same time!

- You can add some flavor replies, that do not actually perform any action in the game. For example, when you say "one down", your assistant can congratulate you ;) You can also ask for the time with a special command (see readme) and it will read it aloud to you (useful with the Rift or if you don't have a watch). With the addition of conditions in the latest version, you can even have a basic conversation, or have the assistant ask for confirmation before performing certain actions. I haven't tried this yet.

- Turn the volume down for the TTS responses, otherwise they will be very loud compared to the game's sound. 30-40% sounds about right. If you set it for one voice reply, it will set it by default for all the next ones.

- Create a voice command to launch the game, it's cool! When I say "launch Elite Dangerous", VA answers "welcome back, commander", and launches the game as well as the TrackIR software and UJR software.

Hope that gives some ideas to some. :)

I tried the VoiceAttack, and I would certainly recommend setting up your own profile. I have a question of my own though, to add to this:

What microphone are you guys using?

I've tried two different cheap microphones with VoiceAttack. Both of them either have very low sound levels, or I turn on "Mic Boost + 20 dB" and then I get a lot of static/noise in the background. In either case, it seems a lot of my commands go unrecognized. Therefore, I was contemplating buying a € 200 USB microphone which I know has excellent sound...but then I'm not entirely sure that it is mic quality that is my main problem. Maybe I'm just not good enough at articulating/pronouncing since I'm not a native English speaker.

I have gone through the speech recognition training three times. And a lot of voice commands are recognized. It's just that sometimes it seems I have to repeat myself over and over, and it is particularly annoying when this happens at frame shift and I have to say "disengage" over and over, seeing my target drift by. Also in combat, the "next target" seems really difficult to get sometimes which can be quite frustrating.

Cant say if its the best but she is a bit cheeky if you want to set her up to add a bit of off game fun while flying. All a matter of taste to be honest.

What microphone are you guys using?
I played around with on-desk microphone and the mic from a webcam. Both worked but not reliably, especially as either the kids tend to be making noise or a TV was on somewhere nearby. So, I've switched to a headset with mic which works really well but is killing my ears (I think I'm developing calluses!). There are some decent/reasonably priced headsets on Amazon so I've added a pair to my Wishlist.

I had a lot of problems with using a usb mike to be honest so I used a Sennheiser pc31 headset from amazon.co.uk. It has the old jack plug sockets and I plugged it into the rear connection on my PC. Realtek onboard sound wouldn't even listen to it in the front jack socket with Voice attack but the headset worked for other things. So whether it was the headset of Voice Attack that wasn't playing nice or even Realtek. not sure.

But in the rear jack it was very good at picking up my voice accurately. It cost me around £17 when I bought it a year or so ago for use with Teamspeak and they have a very good reputation for quality mikes., and this one is very reasonable and is great for listening to music too. Tremendous quality bass/mid/high range for the price.

Thank you for the incredibly detailed response, I'll be sure to use this as reference when setting everything up. :)

At the moment, I'm looking for the best voice pack to use with E.D, do you have any info on which to choose?

Another extra command I've made and added to is a random response one that is ran when I begin the game when I clear some variables used elsewhere. The command is a simple one actually...VA can run commands at the same time, and can also repeat commands over and over. So what this does is runs continuously once started, pauses for 60 seconds, chooses a random number, and if that number is above a threshold (I use 1-10, with 10 being the trigger) it will say a random thing out of a collection of phrases. I keep them very generic, so they would apply in most circumstances I'm in, and the frequency is low enough that it doesn't become annoying, especially if you have enough phrases.

I use Hazel (mainly from watching FireyToad's twitch feed), she comes with Windows 8 or you can download her for free.

Although I haven't used it for E.D yet, I'm using the Blue Yeti USB microphone and compared to all my headset mics, the recording quality is massively different. (especially so with the triple capsule array, allowing for recording in stereo or your choice of three unique patterns, including cardioid, omnidirectional, and bidirectional).

For the price, you'll be hard pressed to find better USB Mic hardware. :)

Would you guys say the Text-to-speech is better than the pre-recorded Vocal Response Compilation's you can buy?

(I'm using Windows 7 if that helps)
