Newcomer / Intro What is the best way to gain rep with hostile Federation

While delivering weapons for the Lugh CG I became hostile with feds. This has totally screwed up my current game as I was aiming towards getting top 70% in the CG and that prize money was looking pretty sweet but now I cant go near the conflict zone because of my rep with feds which I got because I tried to help them in the first place!

So I've been looking for tips or a guide to help me and I searched the forums but only found one or two ideas which havn't helped.
Right now I'm in LFT 1300 system which is a low security system with one outpost controlled by the Federation.
I'm current looking for bounties while in supercruise but they havn't made any difference to rep yet and last night I limped back to the local starport with 20% hull and the local feds blew me up as I approached the entrance slot.
this cost me nearly 200k and left me about 250k in the bank and of course deleted all of the bounties I had collected, grrr....
This system doesn't have a RES so the only option is to interdict bounties.
Should I find a different system to try this in or should I just keep plugging away in LFT 1300?
Does anyone know how many bounties I will need to claim to change my rep?
Is there a particular system that is good for rebuilding fed rep?
Am I doing the right thing or should I be turning in BBS missions or looking for USS's etc.

Do missions for federation-allied factions and hunt baddies in their territory.
Otherwise, if you're still at the start, you may consider clearing your save. It's actually quicker to get where you were for the start than grind rep for days and week to just get to neutral.

Well after a couple nights of constant bounty hunting in LFT 1300 for the feds I got my rep back to unfriendly.

I think the rep system is bugged somewhere because my rep only changed to unfriendly after I had jumped to a neighbouring system. This means that my rep could of changed from hostile to unfriendly on any of my previous nights of bounty hunting and I spent longer stuck in that system doing bounty hunting than I needed to.
I also lost two ships on the approach to the starport to hand in the bounties which left me in the situation where I had to go out and claim bounties without enough cash to cover my insurance re-buy!
Not a good feeling when I think that I was doing this while I could of already been repped-up without knowing!

Anyway, at least I gained some experience with the interdictor and I am quite good at sneaking into starports now!

I found that the rep system wasn't to clear either. I went Hostile with the Feds, and went to an independent system that has a RES and some Fed aligned factions and amassed 1 - 1.2 mil in bounties, but my rep stayed at Hostile. The following day i logged on and jumped to a Fed system that had a Fed outpost so I could do some Fed missions without the problem of getting into a station, and then noticed that I was already back to Unfriendly. Now I dont know if my rep updated overnight, or whether it was jumping to another system, but i think that rep should be clearer, and also it should give you an indication of how you are doing with getting it back.

Rep changes can sometimes take its own good time to filter through. I wholeheartedly disagree with the idea of making rep changes transparent. Lifes not that simple, in a simulation, politics should be vague, unknown and often just plain baffling.

A valid argument, however it would be useful to know what major faction the minor factions are aligned with, or does it tell you that somewhere?

Have a look at your right-hand panel, in the first tab (STATUS): it'll show you your reputation with the 3 major and all local minor factions. If you scroll down, you'll see whom each faction belongs to.

To see more info, switch to the list telling you more about the local system (it's part of the same STATUS tab, but a 2nd page so to speak). You'll find all local factions listed there, including their alliance. Select + click a faction to learn even more about it.

Their icon on the Status tab indicates their major faction.

Thanks for the information, I hadn't notice that. I assume that the influence value on the status page is nothing to do with my rep, only the blue/red arrows which i'm guessing means that my rep is increading/decreasing.

That is true - the influence you see on there indicates the influence each faction has within that system.
