What is the blue orb and why does it exist?

Hey guys
Question: what is the blue orb that sits in the HUD where targeted ships appear? To be specific: to the left of the Scanner, to the right of the Target Information window.
I looks like a blue "planet", but it can't represent one........because it looks the same regardless of the system you are in......ditto the local star for the same reasons. So what? Representation of the universe/sky? It does not seem to change at all (mind you I haven't traveled that far yet TBH).
Any ideas welcome, as my feeling is that it provides no value whatsoever. I don't want it cluttering up my dashboard - it is not telling me anything. Nothing would be better if nothing is targeted IMHO.
OK, grenade tossed - have at it.

Isn't that representing the direction to your currently target? Solid is in front of you, hollow is behind you.

Uhh... You mean the compass? Solid dot in front of you, hollow dot behind you.

Edit: Mmm ninja'd

Edit again: Or are you talking about the hologram? If you have a ship or station targetted it shows the ship. If not it'll show a generic holo of whatever is targetted... Planet, star, moon etc. FYI if you have an orbis station targetted it'll have little arrows on the side to show the entry point.

Its a generic Representation of a planet or a star locked in as target for supercruise.
I think it is one thing that isnt done yet in the game. Its an placeholder i think and probably found to be good enough for now.

At least you can tell you have an target other than a ship.

Thanks for the responses guys - appreciated.
Sandmann / Imagix: I meant the targeting hologram, not the compass (which is VERY useful) - I was talking about when you don't have anything targeted.....then you get the blue orb.
OxKing: YES! Thanks for the response.....I guess we will have to wait and see what Frontier do with it......hopefully something more useful than a generic planet or star or whatever.
