What is the easist way to plot

A 1000ly course leg? I am currently picking a general direction towards a goal and then using the mouse to scroll in the general direction until I get about 980/990 lys. My problem is it takes several mouse scrolls and its not a very straight line, more like a bunch of S curves. I have watched a lot of youtube videos but I haven't seen anyone explain a long range course plot as of yet.

I zoom out until I can see where I am and my target, put the cursor on about a straight line at about 1000ly then zoom back in until I can select a star to aim for.

I often switch the map mode with non-sequence stars only shown and if there's one in the right general area aim for that.

If you're showing the grid on the galaxy map (can be toggled on the options tab, so you might have turned it off) then it's pretty easy. The numbers on the grid are ly from Sol in the three cardinal directions.

W/A/S/D also moves the camera forward/back/left/right depending on where you're facing. So just face your goal and hold down W until you reach the 980/990ly point.

Also you can use Q/E (defaults) to rotate the direction you're facing in the horizontal plane and WASD move relative to the direction you're pointing - which is how you face your goal.

T/G (defaults) give you rotation on the Z axis but WASD still move on the horizontal plane, you can't tilt your view down and dive with W.

R/F move you up and down.

Practice makes perfect. Use the keys to move around the map, read the coordinates.

I have a spreadsheet made up to calculate the legs.

Formula for first 990LY leg where A=source, B=destination, D=distance: A+(1/ceiling(D/990))*(B-A)

Thanks for all of the help, much appreciated! I will try all of theses and see which works best for me. Except maybe the formula on that one hurts my brain. 😁
