General / Off-Topic What is the Metaverse, exactly?

Faecesbook -er- Facebook wants to rebrand and dominate it, whatever it is.

More like Face-Ache-Book but I will pay Faecesbook...... seriously I wouldn't go near Zuckerberg's pathetic hegemony with a barge-pole. It's a toxic cultural garbage dump.

How about changing the name to Zuckerberg's Toilet? That's a good name.... I think the social media platform should disappear up Zuckerberg's metaverse; for all and good.

Can't claim to understand this, but it obviously substantial.

Over the last couple months, tech firms have been headhunting each other.

Microsoft's recent moves to swallow Activision is apparently not game related. They are grabbing up content for their walled garden. Also they want 3 D game engineers to build out the VR based substructure.

This is going to impact all our entertainment, games and devices.

Ehh, seems premature to me. The tech just isn't there yet. They're throwing money at the VR world when the VR tech is still pretty crap. 🤷‍♂️ It's like making all those fusion powered cars and cities now....

What you have there Rubbernuke is augmented reality. The Meta verse will be a completely digital VR environment. It will be the next version of the internet basically.

the way early internet users talk about dial up life before browsers… is how we will sound to our grandkids. They will find it hard to imagine a world without 3D cyberspace and indeed, augmented reality.

At the end of the day, FB is just building their own corner of the space. This thing will be as vast as the internet itself with all the big companies dropping cash to create spaces that they can then charge small time business to rent space within. It will literally be the end of most brick and mortar stores.

what I’m curious about is how these companies are going to agree to handle transitions from one space to the next. Say, moving from virtual Kroger grocery store to then go to virtual MGM Studios theme park.

Indeed- what I was showing was corporate hell in the form of targeted ads, lame life coaches and pointless layers that will sit in it.

The Metaverse is just a giant MMO like we have seen, aspiring to be the Matrix and populated by companies who want to use it as a storefront.

One great big fat waste of time.

If it was something more akin to be set in a fantasy world, cyberpunks'ish or futuristic. Then yeah it could have been fun.

People complain about SC, Meta has cost $700 billion loses.
