What is the one piece of Advice you would offer a New Player.

With Elite: Dangerous about to open it's doors to all and sundry. There are going to be a lot of newcomers who haven't played any game like this. To help them along in their adventure, and make the experience a positive one.

I present an opportunity for all to offer one piece of sage advice, to help them along in the game.

Please try to keep it positive.

Mine:
Be patient, you will make mistakes and become frustrated, but remember, this is an adventure, not a race. And rebind your boost button to a more remote key, to avoid those station face-plant moments.

Test all your flight controls before taking off... the number of times I have seen people die inside a space station... LOL

A dangerous Viper is not to be meddled with.

Dont get cocky with landing.

Set your thrust to 0 when you land - facechecking the tower is never a good move.

I would definitely advocate patience, too - this game is unlike any other and it will take time to realise that you aren't going to be incredibly awesome at it straight away. Take the time to just enjoy the fact that the Galaxy is your oyster.

Use the training scenarios to set up and tweak your control scheme.
Make sure your mouse (or joystick, or gamepad) configs are the way you want them, that you have easy access to up/down/left/right strafe, rolling, pitching and yawing.

And, don't get hung up on the combat training scenarios too much, but do do the navigation/docking training.

Dont buy a new ship until you can buy it twice, cash needed for upgrades
Dont spend all your money....always keep a reserve for insurance.
Be cool, dont rush and enjoy.

Don't wait for the game to tell you anything, accept you will fail at things and don't listen to other peoples complaints as they are usually down to player error and not game faults. :D

Spend time getting your controller of choice set up and familiar.

Do the training missions.

Again and again. Until you're actually comfortable controlling your ship under fire.

Keep calm and trade on.

Take a nice slow approach for your first day in the galaxy. Learn to walk before you try to run.

Get blown up in your starting stock Sidewinder a few times. It's free to replace. It will help you stop sweating when it really counts (a bit).
