What is the point of cargo drones?

So we get cargo drones... and simultaneously get a 20 ton maximum cargo drop per INSTANCE limit. Anything more than 20 tons of cargo immediately explodes. 20 tons can only ever exist at one time. Before the drones came out I could easily scoop 30 - 40 tons of cargo, no sweat, at a time. But now... now we get drones and are limited to 20 tons of cargo?

Why?

Why isn't this being fixed/changed/made more reasonable?

I believe a limit of somewhere around 100 - 200 tons of cargo is reasonable. But 20? 20 is pointless.

Why even use drones? All that effort to put them into the game and we have no use for them now...

So are these things ever going to have a point?

First there is the 20 ton maximum drop limit nerf.

-then-

There is the explode on delivery bug if another ship is within 8 km or so of your own! That's right. Kaboom! If you're winged and a wing is near you... drones explode on each delivery. I have hours of footage and a nice video of this in the bug reporting forum.

BUT the 20 ton limit is the biggest problem.

Yea, it appears drones are only for miners. First change to the mechanics of piracy, and we get a nerf that makes its use impossible. Why bother with drones when I can just scoop and save the internal for a shield cell.

indeed it would seem the drones are not the problem eh...

20T cargo drop limit is a ballsup I think...

There is no real reason I can see why that would be needed in reality... the client should be able to track hundreds of cargo canister objects... maybe a practical 'limit' would have to be equal to the largest cargo hold setup the game currently has... Which I think is an Anaconda decked out with no shields etc...

And for 'solo' it can be set as the largest cargo hold in the instance...

I am guessing you have the prats who were deliberately dropping hundreds of tones of cans outside of station entrances to try to bork up the game instance to thank for that.

for the record I had an instance bug out on me, where the game generated hundreds of ai ships outside the station. They were all cobras and sidewinders iirc and the game engine did not cope well at all.

my frame rate tanked (made worse as i was in VR). this was with a high end rig, had i been on a minimum specs rig I think i would have hurled.

It was introduced to stop "station bombing", a form of griefing that causes massive lag outside stations if you drop enough cargo there. No reasons why it can't just apply to stations and conflict zones.

nevermind : deleted post. seems my second guess was correct. limiting player exploitation of some mechanic.

Given that the stations all have defences, and it's been ages since I've seen any valid scoopables within the NFZ, why not just have the station shoot down any dropped cargo. Litter management. The dropper already gets a fine for littering anyway. The 20T limit on cargo seems ridiculous. When I get pirated, I want to drop at LEAST 50T of Biowaste to annoy him. :D

So back to the main problem: the 20T limit. Not the drone alleged uselessness ;)

Well, they also explode upon delivery if you are in a wing and the wingman is present or any other non-wing ship is present within 8km or so of your own ship upon launching the drones. It's a pretty bad bug.

I see... I understand the problems that could cause...

So just make that limit only apply to station instances and combat zones / crime sweeps and not interdiction and USS SSS WSS instances
