What is the point of the Kill Warrant Scanner?

I've never used one and just bought one to try out- totally worthless. It doesn't work in super cruise, so you must use it while in close proximity which would mean while you are already engaged in combat. It takes ten seconds to scan, and since you already know that the other ship is "Wanted", most likely they are already shooting at you. Am I missing something?

It scans targets to see if they have a bounty in other sectors. The "Clean" or "Wanted" status displayed on the basic scan is limited only to whether or not they are wanted by the controlling faction authorities of the system you are currently in. So for example you could be in Federation space attacking a target with a 5k bounty from the Federation, but using the KWS could reveal that they have an additional 5k from the Empire on top of that, for a total of 10k if you kill them after KW scanning.

A target can also show as Clean and still have a Kill Warrant Scanner bounty from other systems. In fact this is the only way to collect bounties in Anarchist systems, as all targets will show up Clean since there is no law in that sector.

It grabs bounties from other system juristications if applicable on top of the current bounty. They might have a 5K bounty here but a 25K bounty elsewhere, so this will award you a 30K bounty upon the kill. The higher grade KWS, comes with an increase scanning range.

Hope this helps!

It's absolutely necessary if you want to be a bounty hunter, and nets you a good amount of income you wouldn't get if you only went for local bounties. Getting a clean 10 seconds to scan an unwilling mark is all part of the game, son. Easier than it sounds, and good to help you practice target tracking.

Keep in mind that any non-local bounties revealed by the KWS need to be claimed within their specific jurisdictions. So if you're hunting in Fed space, and KWS gets you 5k in bounties from Empire, you'd have to travel to a station loyal to the Empire to claim that 5k.

hu... So without a K-Scanner, even if I kill a ship that has a bounty from another system, I WON'T collect that bounty? Only the bounty from the system I'm in? Like Fed Space bounties on a ship I kill in Anarchy Space will not pay me that bounty unless I have a K-Scanner installed?

EDIT: I know I have to collect fed bounties at a Fed Station, etc.

Exactly, and without the KWS you wouldn't be able to see that said ship even has a federal bounty in the first place.

yes that's right, besides in anarchy systems they are all displayed as clean, when you scan some ships they might have a bounty, you look in the left panel on contacts and it tells you there, not on their badge in the front display.

I haven't tested this, but as long as the bounty from the KW scanner is shown before the ship is destroyed, you still get it, right?

With that in mind, why could you not scan as you fight? I know in my case I'd have to shuffle some things around in the firegroups, but I always use just laser first for the shields, so why not while I'm burning them off, scan him then for any additional credits?

Yes, though bear in mind that there was recently a bug that may not have been fixed yet which causes a completed KW Scan to not apply if you accidentally reset the scan by tapping the scanner's fire button. Basically you scan them as normal and get the Complete, then if you fire the scanner again without fully completing the new scan, it overwrites the completed scan and causes the extra KW bounty to not be given on the kill.

As I said, I don't know if this is fixed yet, so be careful of doing that unless you can confirm that it's working as intended.

That works, it's exactly what I do in controlled systems. Anarchy, scan everyone and only fight wanted people (or those who react to the scan by attacking...) and in controlled systems I only attack the locally wanted but KWS them while shooting with the lasers and switch secondary fire from KWS to multi-cannons when it's completed.

I know they want to keep some kind of "realism" but the 10s scan time on the KWS is a joke. They need to just keep it at 10s for NPCs and change to 5s for players - or at least vastly reduce the scan time on the more expensive KWS.

What is your process to switch secondary weapons around? Is there a fast way to do it or .....?

That's what I do. Just need to complete the scan (and do it only once - if you start the scan again, you must finish it again or you lose the credits it would give you) before the target blows up.

The problem with having it on your weapons fire is that you get the annoying "hood" thing all the time over your crosshair while in combat. That put me off a bit.

I'm not really keen on the whole fire-groups method tbh. It seems overly fiddly when keybinds would do a much better job.
