Sorry if this is something that has been discussed before. What is the purpose of Rank in the game. By rank I am talking about Federation Rank. For instance do I get discounts at Federation ports for being a Warrant Officer versus being a Midshipman. Other than access to Sol and the Dropship is there any other reason to rank up?

I had to give you +rep for that comment, I was laughing as I pictured someone saying it with an incredulous look on his face.
Permits and access to ships are the two benefits currently. On the Fed side the Corvette will appear at some point, which will likely require a higher ranking than is required for the dropship. On the Empire side, DBOBE announced in the AMA that the Imp Courier released in 1.3 will require Master rank, below the Baron needed for the Clipper.
If you are a trader, access to Sol gets you access to a never ending supply of cheap Superconductors, so you can make a nice trade route between Fed democracies and get less and less interdictions as your faction increases with trade

yet the same station did threaten to kill me and my crew for loitering?
The Federal Dropship isn't that useful at the moment, but more Federation ships are inbound, including the highly anticipated Corvette which looks to be the biggest combat-dedicated ship in the game.
