What is the purpose of restricting cargo storage in shipyards?

its in the game already .. its called fleet carriers! you want to store non mission related cargo and use a different ship.. get a FC.. you gotta pay handsomely for the QOL feature tho..

I've been playing for a while now. I cannot for the life of me fathom why when we switch ships that cargo has to go with.

Today, I sold void opals for a pittance just so I could switch to another ship I have that has no cargo racks. A few days ago, I had to dispose of a ton of gold I use as pirate bait for the same reason.

If I place a ship into storage, why can't the cargo contained within that ship stay put?

I don't empty the trunk of my car every time I want to drive the wife's car...
Might be something to do with PP. What you propose could potentially open up PP to a massive exploit with PP Cargo/Leaflets. You can't even store them on a Carrier, only in a ship cargo hold.

I can only see it working if the extra storage occurs at stations rather than ships. As soon as you swap out a ship containing cargo, the cargo is automatically dumped in the station for storage.

That would prevent ships containing cargo from being transferred. And it's closer to what we already have, with all unused ships and modules being stored at stations (or Carriers, but these behave like stations for this). With a remote-sell option, as for ships and modules now.

Unlikely to happen though, as Carriers provide this functionality already.

I don't have a FC. So, what i'm suppose to do when i want change ship with less cargo hold capacity? Throw them into the void of space? I don't know how much time i lose everything while doing something. I try to unlock the corrosive rack so much time but been destroy by npc or by gank. So, i stop trying, and i will stop playing this game only because i cannot store some goods... I'm tired of this. Good luck. I'm out.

Nested containers can play hell on a game.

As for storing them inside the station itself having to track 1 item here 2999 there across hundreds of stations on thousands of accounts wouldn't be great either. This is also why only the carrier owner can store inside the carrier

Weird. Somehow I managed to unlock all the things before FC were even invented.

So what have you tried doing to unlock the corrosive rack?

Get the materials first, these are not lost...
  • Iron, should be easy go to nearest planet you can land on and drive around with your Srv, and shoot at the rocks, hardest part is problably learning how the SRV radar thingie works.
  • Chemical Manipulators, go for mission rewards, or shoot transport ships in Anarchy/Outbreak systems.

For the commodities
  • Neofrabric Insulation, lock for easy missions that rewards these, or go and rob some megaship. I would start with these, as running missions with cargo attracts NPC pirates.
  • Meta-Alloys, they are often best gathered from Thargoid Barnacle site, so the biggest challenge is usually finding out where they are, and then the travel there and back...
  • Radiation Baffle, these are bought, so the biggest challenge with this is to locate a station that sells them. Do these last!

So depending on how much time you play each evening, this should not take more than 2-3 evenings to complete, if you have to gather everything... Foinding out where certain missions rewards spawns is a bit trickier as not all systems/stations spawns the same mission rewards... so you might to travel around a bit.

And if you are truly stumped on where to get this stuff, there tend to be a couple of Fleet Carriers that sells this stuff. They can often be located via Inara, and the biggest challenge is most likely to navigate Inara in that case.

if you get destroyed by NPC,it is a learning curve to avoid this. But run away is a good start, if they keep interdicting, run away to the next system. If the NPC is missions generated NPC's, they are often tougher and more clingy to follow you, learn to pay attention to mission details, these missions warn you that NPC's can be sent after you, and if they are, you get a message alerting you about this.

If you get destroyed by other players, then you have OPTIONS to reduce or eliminate these risks. The most obvious one is to avoid playing Open when you do stuff like this, that is the smart thing todo and these kind of activities are well suited for this avoiding Open.. especially if you complain about loosing cargo your cargo to a ganker.

Planning is the key.
ED is a game requiring some decision making and some planning. And those have consequences.
Now dont get scared, it not rocket science 😇

Granted, ED it's not for everyone - but guess what. It's been quite successful in its niche market for 7 years already - so it must be doing something right.

If only there was some special way to keep track of all that info, some sort of .. database

Yeah, it takes 2 minutes thinking about it to start finding the issues

  • Rares trading is utterly broken - unless you exclude them like FC
  • PP is utterly broken - unless you exclude them like FC
  • Missions are utterly broken, unless you exclude them like FC

About the only think I would support staying with ships is Limpets, but even that has issues. Maybe add station storage - but then you have obvious discoverability issues (now where did I put those LTD 3 weeks ago?).
on the discover-ability issue, it could be managed with station storage if, instead of a convenient head-canon fiction you could assign an actual 'home' station with a rental cost of some level, maybe rep gated with the factions at that station.

In other words you could have A place to store cargo, but not ANY place stores your cargo.
