What is the purpose of the Barnacles?

I found one today. Spent some time wandering around, shooting, scanning ... and at the end ... nothing. Is there anything special about these Barnacles or they have just put some random sites around for people to go and visit with no purpose.

They're placed on planets by Thargoids to mine meta-alloys which I thiiink(?) is what they're ships and structures are made from. It's also their way of laying claim to a region of space. Thargoids plant barnacles in a planet and they grow for thousands or tens or hundred thousands of years or whatever and if anyone's caught setting up shop in that territory they're fair game to get blown away by Thargs.

For the player, they allow you to scoop a selection of the planet's materials at one spot, rather than having to drive around looking for rocks. Also they create meta alloys, which can be sold for about 100k each or used to unlock various items at a tech broker.

They are a trap, for the fool-hardy and greedy Commanders. One shot and the Commanders are marked for life; as legitimate target for the Thargoids.

They are baby Thargoids; which is why anyone who has attacked them, are targets for the Thargoids. Only those who have shot the Barnacles, have been pulled out of 'Jump space' and attacked.

Nope not true, While i have been engaging in these antics my other profile hasnt at all even seen anything to do with thargoids until one day out near them i was pulled multiple times with not even a limpet in my hold, It is completely random who they pull.
