Or bring recon limpets and hack their communications arrays. May net you a bounty but they give encrypted and firmware data up to grade 5. May be more fun than grinding missions.

Thanks guys. I did try checking out the first one I saw, but for some reason I could never 'catch up' to it; it seemed to move away from me slightly faster than I could follow. I just tried again with this one and was able to safe disengage near it, so I'm exploring it now.

Yes I had that at the first installation I visited, it was travelling at several km/s and was out of sight within seconds.

Not sure if this sort of super fast orbit is a bug or intended.

It is a bug with certain outposts, installations, CZ's and RES sites where you drop in and they rapidly speed away from you. It has been reported on numerous times and at one point was a pinned thread on the bug reports under the old system. Sounds like it has not been fixed.

If you click on the planet/base/whatever in the nav panel (like you would if you wanted to lock on to that object) the resulting dialog window shows you what each of the icons assigned to that object mean.
