It's the pinned symbol. Those are materials for engineer blueprints that you have pinned.

No wait... it means that that mat is part of a "pinned" blueprint.

i.e. it's a pin

Not really. To upgrade any item, you have to go through all grades to get to level 5. Most of them more than once to unlock the next level.

Yes, really. I understand exactly why it works the way it does, but my actual experience is that I tend to modules partially g4 or g5 complete. I go hunting for mats, and the exact ones I need are included in a larger set of things I don't need. So I just end up memorizing my list anyway.
