What is with the missions!

My Brother has just started playing Elite - Horizons, been playing for a couple of weeks now and we have been Haz Res hunting together to help him get started. He is now in a Cobra III, not A rated by any means. He wanted to do some missions for a change so after looking at the BB he took 2, 100k assassination missions as they were in the same system, he is Novice rank and missions stated min Mostly harmless so I said he would be fine as I expect the missions are based on a low state ship for his experience and ship.
We winged up again so if he needed help killing the target I could help out ( I have A rated Conda)

We found our first target, was a master Corvette! . . . the biggest ship and before we engaged we also spotted the second target an Anaconda with 2 Vulture escorts and all were clean and green!

What the hell!! who is gonna take on a Vette in a cobra when only been playing 2 weeks, and not even me in my battle conda would bother taking on another conda and 2 vultures (that are clean) for 100k, getting a heavy bounty on my head meaning I could not go back to this system for days! (the system has good CNB so want to go there)

I have 2 possibilities :

1, the large ship targets were given because I was in conda in wing with him
2, the missions are kinda screwed up

Has anyone else had experience of this or has any info that might make us understand this better it would be great to hear your experiences.

This kind of :):):):) has always happened. There's Dangerous level missions where the target is a Sidewinder. Max level trading missions have pay-outs that are under 12,000cr. Hell, look at the current state of mining.

This entire game feels like one big Radiant AI Quest: none of the elements involved are particularly interesting, none of them are really connected to one another, they're literally endless, and their creators don't really care about the execution.

Yeah, that's ED for you. Instead of developing the core game.. ergo missions and things.. we got PowerPlay, CQC and now Horizons. What you are experiencing is the lack of care FD have for anything except a development and marketing cycle to milk more cash out of fans. Core game be dammed.

Hello Op,

Wow what helpful and insightful comments you have so far.

I believe the targets are calculated based on the members of the wing, in our particular example the Condor can do all the work and the Cobra just hit the target once to complete the mission, the game is adjusting for this. I took 2 x 150K assassination missions last night. Normally I would expect the target in a Python at that sort of level 50/50 on the clean/wanted as the mission did not suggest they would be wanted. Both of my targets were in eagles, and each had an eagle escort. I was trying out my new Viper Mk IV when I took these, rather than my normal FAS/Python.

When I do conflict zones with some friends we have stopped winging up as the spawn frequency increases with wing membership - this started in 1.4. Before 1.4 we used to split into 2 pairs to maximise kills per hour to feed the civil war. Post 1.4 we do not form wings at all.

I would advise using only Voice Comms to assist in the future and let the mission holder get the last shot to complete the mission.

I got a pair of Vultures and an Anaconda (all dangerous if I recall correctly) when I accepted my first and so far only assassination mission. I was about a week into the game and in an Imperial Courier. Didn't go so well.

Unfortunately this is how it is, I really think they need to rework many missions, but assassination is up there on the priority list IMO.

I'm in a moderately equipped Vulture and it seems every assassination mission I take the target is in an Anaconda with escorts, whether it's a 60k mission or 200k mission. When I was in my Viper mk3 (I just recently upgraded) I would get targets in smaller ships.

An Interesting mixed bag of answers here, Smiths121 - Thank you this makes sense and was what I thought might have been the case.

Thanks everyone

I do think the missions in general need a huge look at, but thats another discussion :)
