... to give up caffeine.
I vowed to give up caffeine this year.
I tried going cold-turkey, but after ~5 hours I developed a migraine. Not just a dull headache... a migraine.
It felt like a dagger being plunged into my brain, it was unbearable. Minutes after drinking a coffee it disappeared, so I know that lack of caffeine in my system caused it.
So, I decided to give it up gradually over 3 days -- to avoid the migraine.
Day 1: drink only half-caf coffee. Dull headache, and tired, but I dealt with it.
Day 2: mix full caf and decaf to have a quarter of the caffeine. Dull headache, but I dealt with it.
Day 3: mixed it up so it's a quarter of the caffeine. Sometimes I'd have a dull headache, but I dealt with it.
Day 4: Just decaf. No headaches.
So, I've been drinking decaf for about a week, and I feel WAY better than I did when I was drinking ~12 cups of super strength strength coffee each day -- turns out you're only supposed to add one rounded tablespoon of coffee grind per cup. Over the years I more than doubled that. I suspect I was consuming ~2000mg of caffeine per day... for years.
My fasting blood sugar dropped from 105 to 85.
Yeah, I know decaf has some caffeine, but it's only like less than 10% of what's in regular coffee. I only drink 6 cups per day now, and I measure the grinds with a tablespoon. I drink homemade ginger tea (from the root, grated, with 2 drops of liquid stevia) when I want to drink more of something hot.
I don't miss it, and I feel better. I also save some money, which is always nice. I'm going to call it as mission accomplished!
