What kind of sales numbers can ED expect to see?

Mods, if this is some kind of taboo subject for speculation, apologies and please delete the thread. I'm just curious as to whether there have been any numbers released on people who backed the Kickstarter + have bought into the betas, and how large the market might be for this game. Something on the scale of what EVE has seen, perhaps (IIRC about 100,000), or more?

There was 25,681 Kickstarter backers.

At the beginning of June there was over 50k backers. My guess is today backers nr is around 70-80k.

FD have provides some figures - PB expanded about ~15k players, SB about ~20k players (at the time of release). Add that to 3k-5k alpha backers. Plus additional Beta backers who joined post-Beta release.

My guess currently 70-80k backers (maybe around 45-50k Beta players).

For FE2 in the 90s, between 500 000 and a million copies had been sold, just in Europe. I think that ED for the next three years, could be sold between 10 and 20 million copies all over the world

Seriously doubt it.

Not even some of the big name titles sell so much. Couple of millions? Yes. But seriously doubt 10-20 million range.

Frontier has already sold games to 10 million copies. FE2 in the 90s was not a multiplayer online game. Much less people had a PC. The video game industry is expanding rapidly in recent years. Ed will release on PC, MAC, Linux and perhaps on consoles ... In the next three years, there will be planetary landings and other expansions. Mr Braben will certainly target the Chinese market. Etc ...

Maybe not 10-20 million but if they bring steam into it, plus with the help of some decent review scores and a high metacritic rating. I don't see why the playerbase can't explode early on.

I know mentioning steam can get a bit touchy with people, I used to think it was a bad thing when it first started out, these days i really like the platform.

I don't think anything less than world domination is a good proposition. Of course we want the game on Steam, in China, and shipped with the first expedition to Mars. Expand, explore, and exploit that market! it is the only way to secure some great expansions!

I don't think the number of sales matters much, really. The game's real value to FDev will be as a demonstration of what the COBRA game engine can do & I expect they'll make more money from licensing it to other devs than they'll make from sales of ED.

Nobody knows. There hasn't been a decent space trading and combat game in years so no one knows how big the potential market is. This is one of the reasons FD couldn't get a publisher to back the game and had to go the kickstarter route.

The problem with trying to project numbers is that there hasn't been a game like this for a looooong time, hence no-one really knows what the size of the market really is. It's pretty clear that there is quite a lot of pent-up demand for the genre, but we won't really know until it's out

Having produced consul games Frontier has the experience to transfer ED quickly, and it could have been made for Project Morpheus, so yes in the end I think it's possible for ED to sell in the millions.

Only time will tell but GL David you deserve it

It's a tricky one for sure. WoW had 12 million subscribers at peak (wouldn't like to estimate it's actual sales of software though), CoD had 5+ million sales. I imagine GTA5 sold pretty well too.

The thing is, ED is PC based whereas the really major sellers tend to be on consoles.

A million would be a really impressive number, if it goes well on PC and Mac and FD plan a console conversion...who knows?

it will sell 3,874,352 on earth alone in its first months...

now add the figures for all 400 billion star systems like loadsamoney

Yes several millions

:)

The only thing that gives me pause is that Elite is in a somewhat niche genre + has relatively complicated controls compared to something like CoD. I certainly hope it sells into the low millions over its lifetime.
