What music do you listen to on long exploratory journeys ?

I'm kind of curious what music do you explorers like to listen to, when sailing far aways among the distant stars.

I listen to a lot of stuff, but the top of the list for me is Oxygène by Jean Michel Jarre, which creates the perfect feeling of being alone in places where no one has ever been to. Another one is Stellaris soundtrack.

Metal. I love all kinds of metal, except for some of that "Rap Metal" (to quote Zimmer's Hole).

Doom is my favourite for exploration; Electric Wizard, Mammoth Weed Wizard B*****d and Bell Witch all fit well.

Really interesting topic. Thanks for bringing that up. I am surprised what the suggestions have been so far. Guess its really up to taste...

I am about to embark on another journey and will try out the following:
Nils Okland (any album will do)
Goldmund (again any album will do)

Might be too depressing for others. To me those tracks reflect the harsh environment and positive lonliness out there...

I'm not a fan of music in games, in most cases I mute it out. And ED is too good sound-wise to dampen the experience by music.

However, I recommend, as always, Arjen Anthony Lucassen and his projects (especially Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine and Ambeon).

For me, lots of electronic, synthwave, and ambient. A sampling here:

On my current (slow) roadtrip to colonia I've been listening to compilations of Noir Jazz / Dark Jazz.
Completely different from my normal listening but it worked really well.

I am an original Elite player of 84: From 1986 onwards; whilst playing Elite I have played Jean Michel Jarre's 'Rendez-Vous Houston' whole album and still do in Elite Dangerous Horizons & Odyssey. Rendez-Vous contains the saxaphone piece that astronaut Ron McNair was to play at the Houston concert via live link from space, unfortunatley he was killed in the Challenger disaster. (Sax player Kirk Whalum took Ron's place on the night). The sax piece was renamed by Jarre from 'Last Rendez-Vous' to 'Ron's Piece' in his honour.

Just brilliant album (and specific track) that for me is the perfect 'Elite' 'exploration' backing track: For me personally it links the original Elite with the game we have now.

...as I write this I'm far out in the black on my explorations listening to Rendez-Vous on repeat quietly in the background..... just sublime. o7

I don't have time for music. See for yourself: jump into the system, then refuel or walk away from the star. Turn on the discovery scanner at the same time. Finally, start FSS. It has its own music. Clicking of belt clusters. The rustle and squeak of celestial bodies and signals. Isn't it music? And then a new jump. But it so happens that you have to fly to an object inside the system for a long time (more than 10Kls). Or travel around the planet in an SRV. Yes! Music won't hurt here. Mysterious, enigmatic. Sometimes disturbing, sometimes relaxing. In this case, I really like "Tangerine Dream" (already mentioned here). Especially their Force Majeure album.

PS) I wonder if there is any way to edit tracks in ED?
