What next after the Eagle?

Ok so its taken 2 days of playing but I have finally purchased myself an Eagle and dumped that Sidewinder.

I'm a little disappointed at only having 2T cargo room so trading is off the table. What do you do with a new Eagle to make money fast? Is it harder than the Sidewinder in battles? I need cash.

Do some bulletin board missions or bounty hunting to get more cash then you can add better modules & more cargo space until you have enough to upgrade to the hauler/adder for better trading.

The Eagle can't take much in the way of hits but it's the most manouevrable ship in the game and can be better armed than the Sidewinder.

The Eagle is much better than the Sidewinder at fighting, due to its maneuverability. So go bounty-hunting. Try to mess only with Wanted Sidewinders and other Wanted Eagles to get bounties as you cannot mess with better ships yet.

The Eagle is your training/appetizer for the Viper or the Cobra. The real early game fighters. Cobra can become an all-rounder too.

The Eagle is more wiggly than the Sidewinder, so combat is a much more enjoyable experience with it.
I still fly my Eagle because it is so much fun to be in a "fighter" that just zooms, and booms, and flips, and wiggles. Spend so much time in an Asp or a Type 7 and it is a fantastic relief to get into a real fighter type.

I fly a Viper and an Eagle both, depending on what mood strikes me, but both are equally fantastic combat ships.
I began doing the 150k - 200k Anaconda assassination missions with my Eagle once I got upgraded hull, power gen, shields, and distro (As).

I would look at data transfer missions, bounty hunting missions, bounty hunting in anarchy Nav Beacons (or any Nav beacon really). If you are a skilled pilot, you can easily tackle the Elite Anaconda missions for the large payouts. I've posted the tactics for it a handful of times, but they appear to be invisible and everyone's convinced you need a billion shield cell banks to have a chance in any ship. *shrug*

The Eagle can't take much in the way of hits but it's the most manouevrable ship in the game and can be better armed than the Sidewinder.

You apparently never put hull or upgraded shields on your Eagle before selling it.
It takes hits just fine, but its strength is in being maneuverable enough to avoid being in a firing line.
Will it tank as well as a Type 7? Of course not. It is a small ship. But it isn't going to pop just because you got hit a couple times.

OK, compared to other things then, you can give the same upgrades to any ships, but like you say its defence is manouevrability not toughness.

I've not spent much time flying Eagles, true. Good fun whilst I did though. Once my Viper is up to spec (I wiped and restarted a little while ago) I may add an Eagle to my ship collection, I'm working on kitting out every ship I get then storing it rather than selling.

For me it was bounty hunting in the local anarchy system while saving up for a shiny new Viper to go after the big boys with

I also store my ships. I currently have nine ships.
The Eagle is a fun ship. I still enjoy my time with it, and it can take more abuse than people think.

Just have to be awake to fly it, because you don't want to go face to face with a Python or Elite Anaconda.
I don't want to do that in my Asp or Viper, let alone my Eagle.

Eagle is rated by many as a good maneuverable craft. It can be fitted out with more than 2 cargo I think! However, it does depend what class of equipment you put in each slot. There are a few options you can try, all with varying levels of risk!

1. Trading - refit to carry more cargo but that reduces other equipment you fit it out with. Make money by looking for a HIGH SUPPLY commodity and taking it to a place where it is in HIGH DEMAND. If you can find a route where there is a different commodity to trade the other way for similar gains, all the better!

2. Missions - take some of the delivery and/or fetch missions which should give you higher profits than basic trading. Again, you may need to refit to take a little more cargo! Some missions are for killing pirates, best not take the BIG ones (about 140k credits!) as these are usually for killing some pirate or other in an Anaconda - this is for a BIG ship with BIG GUNS on it! You WILL die! .... well until you get yourself a well tooled up Viper at least, and know what you are doing!

3. Bounty Hunting - this is where (for some!) the real fun and excitement starts! Outfit your Eagle as a killing machine and go to any Nav Beacon or Extraction site and drop out of Super-Cruise (SC). You should soon find a few WANTED pirates who appear around these. Nav Beacons are near the sun. Scan them to see if they are WANTED. If you outfit with a K-Warrant scanner as well, it will tell you (contacts on left hand screen), where they are wanted and who by! It might save you shooting someone who shows up as WANTED but is basically 'friendly' to the current system faction! Otherwise local security might suddenly become interested in you!

4. Out and out piracy! - you need an Interdictor module for this! Grab people out of Super-Cruise and hope they drop some cargo before they run! You need a cargo scoop for this. The down side here is they may start shooting YOU!! If you blow someone up everything is vapourised. Note that any cargo picked up like this will be classed as STOLEN and thus you will have to avoid being scanned on entry to a space station or be fined.

5. USS hunting - if you find a USS (Unidentified Signal Source) you could try dropping out of SC and see what's there. It could be many things, some have found a Funeral procession, a wedding party, the occasional pirate ship (possible bounty opportunity?), and just canisters of cargo floating about as a navigation hazard! If you have a cargo scoop you can collect them for free - HOWEVER as all cargo is 'tracked', the Authorities still treat this as STOLEN so a fine will be handed out if you are caught with them. Best sneak into a space station and try the Black Market! (see contacts on main Starport Services screen)

6. Discovery - a slightly different tactic, but does bring in the credits. Use the basic discovery scanner to blow the 'STAR TRUMPET' at every system you jump through. In some of them you will find it has 'Discovered xx new objects'. This information can be sold to the Galactic Cartographers once you have traveled more than 20 light years from where you collected it. In the early days I found I was regularly collecting 1000 credits here, 1200cr there, without really doing anything, other than going about my business!

NOTE: Sneaking into a space station without being scanned involves either flying in REALLY QUICKLY before they can scan you - and risk ending up as a smear on the front end of a T9 trying to exit at the same time! - or going for SILENT RUNNING (right hand screen) and possibly risk overheating!!

There's some ideas, I'm sure others will fill in with any gaps I've left!

Eagles can easily take on larger ships with two fixed beams (Or pulse lasers if that is your flavor) and a gimbaled multi-cannon on the top mount.
I began the Elite Anaconda missions in my Eagle once I got some equipment put on it.

Once you get a few parts installed you can very easily take on Vipers, Cobras, Asps, and Conda's. Pythons are the more dangerous of the bigger ships and can be tricksies.
