I have been mining lots of different ores in various planetary rings but the count is not going up. Is there some particular ore I need to mine ?

Try relogging. Sometimes it sticks.
1.) You can mine any ore. As long as it gets processed into a full unit (added to your cargo) it counts towards the 500.
2.) You will need 10T of Painite at some point, so keep that in mind as you decide where you want to mine.

Been a while but I have been mining and refining and it just sticks at 25 out of 500 !
This engineer is literally the worst aspect of engineers holy damn i am still only at 339 /500 its insane, i wouldnt mind yes i could have done it a long time ago however mining isnt exactly my go to playstyle lol it needs to be more profitable i mean there should be an increase in profit on self mined materials
If the only reason you are mining is to unlock Selene, the last thing you should be thinking about is profit. Take a decent mining ship - Python or Anaconda. Fit 2 or 3 medium mining lasers, a refinery, a 1A prospector, enough controllers for 4-5 active collectors per laser. Fill your hold with limpets. Go to a pristine metallic ring and prospect roids that aren't spinning wildly. You should mine the roids regardless of the contents. If your hold is getting full, discard ores. Just keep painite and maybe a few others. 500 tons should take 3 hours max.

I just spent 3 hours and refines over 140 ore in my hold. I was at 155 when I started and I am still at 155!!!! I have relogged and it just sticks at 155!!!!!!!! I hate this grind !!!! It is bad enough when it works but to blow 3 hours and literrally get a finger stuck in my6 eye! GG Frontier! I hat65e you~!
I'm currently wearing a T9 in a Pristine metallic doing the exact same thing. I'm trying to only accept things beginning with P inside me but it does take some discipline.
The Panite isn't that common but I did find a 42% Panite rock that got me half way on its own. I can carry over 300 tons but I think I'm only just over halfway and it does seem to be quite a slow process. I think I've spent more than three hours already.

The Selene grind seems to be broken at the moment, although it was working fine yesterday.
And yes, wasting time is not fun at all. [mad]
It took me about 6 hours to find the first 8 tonnes of painite (I was mining in a shieldless Fed dropship, in a haz res, so whenever I got two or three tonnes I'd boost the hell out of there to avoid pirates). Then on my last run the RNG gods smiled and I found 11 tonnes in 15 minutes.
There aren't any mining-related upgrades. Certainly not the available collector ones. Why would a miner care if his controller was a little lighter? Or reinforced?
The only current upgrade that directly helps miners is an upgrade to the distributor.
Interesting video. It's the first one I've seen complaining about mining that actually uses a halfway decent mining build on the ship. Though I'd suggest that it is more suited to bulk mining than looking for painite. A more maneuverable ship with at least two active prospectors would be better for this.
The other thing I'd suggest is ignoring roids lower than 15% painite, unless you only need a fraction of a percent to complete. You end up spending 95% of your time prospecting rather than drilling, unless you can't resist a 60% platinum roid or two.
