What portion of the game do you own as a costumer?

Nobody who ever bought any computer game owns any part of those games.

You buy a license to use the copy of the software you took home (back in the days when we actually had to leave the house to get our games!)/downloaded.

Thus it has always been.

You don't own any game, movie or song file that you purchase. It is owned by the copyright holder(usually the publisher) all you're buying is a licence to use it, in whatever form they choose to distribute it.

There is quite a high level of de facto ownership in DRM free (via any means) games.

I'm not disputing that - nor am I aware of any attempts to revoke those licenses where it was more involved than banning someones account for an online game.

I'm just surprised* so many people seem to be unaware of the terms of sale/eula they accept/enter into at point of purchase, and this isn't the first time I've seen this question asked on these forums, so thought I'd put that out there early in this thread, since i had the opportunity.

* I shouldn't be, but I am.

What is the obsession that people have with ownership?

This is like the media constantly going on about "tax payers own xxx". Tax payers don't own anything. Paying tax doesn't mean you're purchasing a portion of the governmnet.

Same here in Elite. You don't own anything other than the right to play the game. You aren't paying a monthly subscription, you aren't helping fund the servers that hold any synced data, so what exactly is it you think you own?

legally? the only part of the product you own as a paying consumer is a single license for server access with stipulations to follow a preset ToS and EULA, else have that license terminated.

you dont, those save files and all thats on them are the intellectual and digital property of the company that made them, your just allowed to createand interact with additional save files as part of your contract of purchase for the license to use the software contained on the CD

It's not quite as simple as many people think. If you had a stand alone product, you would have the rights to give or sell the product as you saw fit. However as you specifically mention the lack of offline, quite rightly pointing to the fact the game requires a constant connection to the developers. You could argue you own your copy of the game, license and anything related to the game that you were given for purchasing the game. The trouble with this ownership is that you can't simple hand it over to another person and say "there you go, it's yours now, I've deleted it from my PC so we are all good" as it requires certain security checks ( mainly email addresses, store accounts etc) So unless FDEV offer some facility to allow sale of accounts, changing emails etc it's a fairly moot point.
