What really grinds my gears about some player factions.

Is when a neighboring faction demands that you not even expand into their space. If you know anything about how BGS expansion works then you know that you are forced to expand into the nearest system with an open slot for a faction first within the expansion cube. By demanding this they are effectively cutting you off from any systems further from your system than they are.

Groups who demand this either do not understand the mechanics or are being disingenuous.

Arguably if one country wanted to advance it's borders it wouldn't bother going around another country before invading the next one. It would invade the first. You either need strong diplomatic relations to plant yourself in another country else you're an invading force

It's why the rule of 1st there gets the system, 2nd there shares the system works for all non Powerplay systems.

Either they're bigger than you, in which case it might be an unreasonable demand but you're the one who's going to lose control of all your systems if you defy it ... or you're bigger than them in which case you can expand in and they can't really do much about it.

If you're not right out on the fringes, quietly expanding an NPC faction into their system to bring it up to 7 factions should let you bypass it, of course.

this. we usually say: that's all dandy, if you keep all your systems full of 7 factions and those non-natives above the influence of all others in range - we'll give you a warning if we threaten to invade.
turns out after playing this game for a few expansions latest, most player groups prefer us expanding into their space than doing the necessary work.

My squadron always make contact before we even land in another PMF's system. It's just the smartest thing to do to be right up front with your intentions and to build good relationships with your neighbors. Like we're near Sol so ya'll know that area is heavy with PMFs and we have built a good relationship with most of the PMFs that have many systems.

But yeah that PMF, OP, demanding you don't ever expand into their system is unreasonable. If they do not want you there they can just you know Retreat your faction out after the Retreat block has expired then your next expansions won't go there since that system will be put at the bottom of the priority list.
