Newcomer / Intro What settings you would suggest for my current PC?

Hi Guys,

I'm new to ED and currently have the game downloading in the background here for the very first time.

What I'd like to ask some of you experienced ED players is, "What exact in-game settings would you suggest for my particular PC rig?" My specs are as follows...

OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
CPU: Intel i3 3240T 2.9Ghz
GPU: Asus GeForce GT 740 v2 OC 1GB Edition
RAM: 6GB DDR3

I know these aren't the best or even close to recommended specs and I also know the the GPU especially lets this rig down. But, from the research I've done before buying ED, I should be able to run the game on Low to Medium settings until I at least upgrade my GPU.

So, what I'm asking you guys is this... To the best of your knowledge, which settings within the game should I tweak in order to get the best out of ED based on my current rig?

Thank you in advance and I look forward to any and all advice you can give me. :)

I guessed that it probably would set some defaults. Thanks for the confirmation on that Hagle! Is there anything else I could tweak after that in order to push things a little further while still keeping things as smooth as possible?

Yes, I do plan on upgrading the GPU down the line. But for now it's not really possible due to my current financial situation. I was just about able to get the cash together to buy the game itself. It'll be a few months from now until I'll be able to do so basically. :(

What kind of FPS do you consider acceptable?

Let the game autodetect the settings, then turn settings down - particularly anti-aliasing - until it hits that number.

Shadows, lighting, textures... everything counts.

I recommend logging out of the game and starting again between settings changes.

See what happens when you let nVidia GForce Experience optimise your setting, I'm not saying it will be perfect, but it's a start.

Well i did play with a Intel Dual core 3000MHz, 4Gb Ram, a GTX 460 OC 2 GB and win7. The game gave me high settings and did run pretty good.
The only reason i did change the settings was the CPU and GPU where running at 70 Degrees C.

Now i got me a Xeon octa core 3300 MHz, gtx 980 and 16 GB ram. The game runs on ultra very smooth and CPU and GPU are not even getting hot.
One thing i did notice. With new PC i got some sound issues when the GPU loads grafic data. Means when i change sight to modules or ship dashbord i can reproduce that the sound disrups a short time.
I had none of thease issues with the other PC.

Anyway the game is really awesome in ultra settings from visuals.

Thank you 100thmonkey and Feldspar. They are some pretty cool suggestions. I'll be jumping into the game for the first time a little later tonight or tomorrow evening. (Work as a freelance web/graphic designer leaves me with little playtime lately). I'll let you all know how I get on. Thanks again! :)

Sorry for the double post but just wanted to let you guys know that I've got ED up and running just fine and smooth. I took the advice that you guys gave me and allowed the game to select the best options. It choose to set everything to Medium. I then set Nvidia Experience to optimize everything for ED. That's all I did. Nothing else so far. I've no idea what the exact FPS I'm getting is but it's pretty smooth so far when playing through the first few tutorials and it doesn't look too bad either! So, once again... thanks guys for your help!

Now... if I could just figure out how to bring up the menu so that I can request permission to dock at the tutorial station! lol. (I'm sure I can figure it out somehow) :D

Thanks again!

CTRL+F to view the framerate in the bottom left corner.

Use the 1 key (the one above Q) to open the menu for docking permissions, press E twice to change tabs, and you should see the option. (Unless I'm mistaken; I'm playing with a joystick and typing with Dvorak, so both my QWERTY and my keyboard bindings are a bit rusty.)

Thanks Hagle. I managed to figure it out. My bindings seem to be a little different from yours. My 1 key doesn't do anything at all lol. My E key is bound to Right Thrust. However, I'm also using a Joystick, an old Sidewinder Mk1 and it seems my mouse wheel button is bound to look around the cockpit. I finally managed to use that and play around a bit and eventually found the command to request docking. Yay me right? lol. (sometimes I love being a noob, don't ask why! :p)

Thanks for the tip for finding out my FPS! Next time I jump back ingame I'll see what framerate I'm getting on this rig and post back here with the result. Maybe all this info will help some other new player someday? Who knows? Thanks again! :)

Sorry for both the double post again AND this late reply. I said that I would report what kind of FPS I'd be getting on this rig so, here it is...

I'm very very surprised that on this less than Minimal Requirement rig set on Medium settings that I am getting frame rates like a constant 60FPS in space and between 30 - 39 FPS in stations! This to me is amazing because I never expected the framerates to ever be this high on this rig. The game looks and feels great! I know it could be better but the game is MORE than just playable!

I really hope that all this info etc. helps someone else out there someday soon.

Thank you very much everyone for all your help and I'll hope to see you someday out there in the vastness of the galaxy! :)
