What ship and stuff for a new explorer

Hello guys!

I want to explore! That's cool! But... what is the best ship to do this? i have a MK3, i could buy an ASP.

Is the ASP better?
What stuff should i have on my ship?

Thx!

The Asp is great, but you'd want the A class FSD. This makes it very costly. A stripped down Type-6 with an A-class FSD has nearly the same jump range, so might be a better bet if you can only just afford an Asp.

I think the Asp is hands down the best exploration ship... but it isn't cheap.... if you have the money go with the Asp. IF not, your MK3 can make a fine exploration ship as well. Just get the lightest versions of everything non essential and an A class FSD to maximize your jump range. You can get acceptible jump range in the MK3 but the Asp easily gets 30-35 LY which is really nice.

If you buy the Asp. Will you have enough money left over to fit it out and have 2x the cost of replacement? If not, I'd wait a bit before upgrading.

Cobra is absolutely fine to explore in. Asp is the best but expensive to get it properly kitted out. Basic discovery scanner is ok, intermediate is better and advanced will save you loads of time. DSS will eArn you more cash. The best fuel scoop you can afford. I dont have weapons and am ok at running away

hauler is not bad either. about 2.9 mil maxed out for exploration. jump range is 28.55 if you are not carrying shields or heat sinks. i yesterday came home from 20000ly trip in hauler.

Yep, just got back today from around 8,000 Ly in Hauler-based exploration fun.

I've swapped it back for a Cobra Mk III, though now, just to keep things interesting.

I'll do a bit of rare trading and smuggling in the Cobra for a while, then my plan is to strip it back for exploration and do some specific "find really interesting stuff" runs that do not require a huge jump distance.

For me, an Asp still seems a very long way away...

Ok thx for the link and anwser, it's interesting.

Does the "surface detector" is important?

IIRC it doubles the payout for scanned objects, and gives you more info on them too.

For an explorer Asp, you'll probably want to have at least 15 million, maybe a little more.

I grinded out a rares loop for a week to get my 15 million for a souped up ASP i got all the best bits for it the avanced scanner, A class FSD ect ect - THE ASP RULES it really is the best for exploring the jump range (I get 36-37ly depending on weight of fuel tank) really makes a difference when in areas where stars are quite far apart. I am just a noob really but in my opinion its worth doing a bit of grinding to get yourself the ASP and then there's the fun of finding all the right modifications at different bases. Yeah you can use the Hauler and Cobra and get to some great places but the ASP makes it a little bit easier - i'm hoping that new ships coming out in future updates will be even better maybe have a 50 ly range, fingers crossed eh.

Pound for Pound, Dollar for Dollar, the Hauler is the best explorer in the game, hands down, the ASP maybe the best in terms of absolute range, but a 6 mill + price tag and that is just for the hull, equipping it, your gonna probably drop another 12 to 14 mill on what, another 5 lightyears. Totally not worth it.

Until they have the ability have your friends come on board to take the second seat, and design a mechanic that will improve the experience by having a second person on board, the Asp is not worth it. I would even say the Adder is not worth it because you can squeeze just a tad bit more out of the Hauler's FSD in terms of distance.

Seriously, go with a hauler and equip it it with the best FSD, Powerplant, and Fuel scoop, get a detail surface scanner and a Advanced discovery scanner and bam your done.

my build if your interested.

Hauler is the lightest ship.

But, really, exploring is underwhelming until you have a 1.5mil scanner.

I'm having fun exploring in my Cobra. Currently somewhere between the Pelican Nebula and the Sadr Region, exploration is just one more thing on the list of stuff the Cobra is great for. That list encompasses everything in the game at this point :)

The hauler might get you there, but the Asp gets you there in style. Not to mention the view...

true, but this guy said he was BEGINING as an explorer, so it might behoove him better to get something practical and good, not to mention cheap if he kills himself.

why bother being that conservative in your gaming? Credits are easy to get in this game, Credits - they don't have owners only spenders get your self the stylish asp and enjoy the view and jump range.
You can just grind out a rares route or too if you go broke and rebuy another ASP.. I love my asp worked damn hard to get it and a pooh pooh on your cheap old man hauler solution :)

(BTW - If any LAKON People are reading this I would love a job in one of your showrooms)

Snap. I use my Cobra for a bit of everything - except mining!

A-class fuel scoop, a couple of beam lasers and a good shield. I still only have the basic discovery scanner - I find most planets using "Eyeball, Mk1, Pilots for the use of." And the surface scanner. Not found too many new systems (over 10 though) but made quite a bit of money selling detailed data on systems that other guys have "discovered" but couldn't be bothered to scan.

When I choose a new system (say 40ly away,) I use economic mode navigation to go out, and fast mode to return to an inhabited system to sell the data. I find it fun, especially when I get npc's asking "How do you make any money?" The remains of their ships generally lets them know.
