Ships what ship for railgun only build? also, general advice on combat?!

i want to do a bit more combat, pve only, and i really enjoy using railguns. i don't know much about building combat ships. all i know is railguns build a lot of heat. i tried a courier build with 3 railguns but one burst puts heat levels to 120% already, damaging my modules.

can you recommend, or is it even possible to build a railgun only ship without overheating it to critical levels? i'd prefer smaller ships.

so far i tried the fer de lance. with 4 railguns it overheats too fast. with 3 it's ok'ish but i was wondering if there are better alternatives.

also would like general recommendations about possible combat builds. i've used gimballed all my career. tried railguns once and fell in love. want to try other fixed variants as well. how good are plasma accelerators? tried them only a couple times but since they're projectiles, they're harder to aim. should i keep trying?

It kind of only works if you used one of the three experimental effects on the railguns to reduce heat: feedback cascade, super penetrating, or plasma slug. They reduce thermal load by 40%. If you don't have those engineered yet, make it your next priority.

This is the place to start.

Ship-wish, the FdL and Alliance Challenger are both solid ships for the setup, but you'll need the engineering first.

What Red Zephyr said.

If you don't have any engineering, for small ships the DBS is probably the best choice purely from the heat management side of things.

For general pve combat suggestions, fly a Chieftain if you haven't yet. The 3 small hard points have great convergence, and I'd guess it could handle the heat of those all popping off rails at the same time without engineering.

Add a Heat sink - I believe I'm right in saying that thermal damage is applied to that module in preference to others and you can use it to keep your ship cool too and break the target lock of hostile ships.

Diamondback Explorer can be engineered to run really cool maybe use it as your rail gun platform ?

I built a Chieftain today, 2 large plasmas and the other 4 slots with rails. It does overheat but not too bad, once I engineer the rails to reduce heat it should be grand. It does need the PP to be overcharged to G4 level though.

It’s an absolute monster to be honest, liking it a lot so far

Makes sense, it's basically a Vulture if instead of stuffing a Vulture into a small ship hull, it was fleshed out as a ship.

You should try the Diamondback Scout. This ship runs super cool even with dirty drives. On my DBS I'm using two Imperial Hammers :)
