Ships What ship to get next?

I liked my Cobra but sold it so I could save up for an Asp, but is the asp a decent cargo ship as well as a good explorer ship? I had it before but had to wipe my save, and can't remember what internals it has. I have a T6 transporter at the moment with 2 32 cargo racks, and 2 8 racks, could the T6 be a good explorer ship? Maybe change those cargo racks into fuel bins?

Asp is a perfectly good trading ship if you want to equip it that way - better than a T6. And as I understand interdictions are tougher since 1.4, not only does an Asp give you more cargo capacity, but much better agility, acceleration, and if you prefer to fly armed, the capability of taking out many would-be interdictors without much of a problem (I don't have any current experience, as I'm out in the deep black since before 1.4 dropped, and only now making my way back to the bubble...in my trusty Asp, but pre 1.4, I did many cargo and mining runs in my Asp, and would only run from a Python or above interdictor - anything else I would personally shred for inconveniencing me). A T6 can really do nothing but run from an interdictor and hope they aren't packing something that can punch through the shields before the FSD can spool up. Really, the next step up from an Asp for trading would be a Clipper/T7/Python.

The T6 is actually not a bad explorer, but unless you're rolling in credits, and can afford an Anaconda fit for exploration, the Asp is currently the best explorer out there.

Basically, stick with the Asp.

Basic answer to your question: yes and yes. The Asp is an outstanding piece of kit. I've flown all (Federation) ships in this game minus Conda and I own a Python and an Asp. I wouldn't ever get rid of the Asp.
Superb multi role ship, agile, tough, fast and with amazing range.
Don't even consider the type 6. You are wasting your credits Cdr.
My explorer Asp build is in my signature (Damocles) Has taken me to the core and back and helped me map hundreds of first find neutron stars black holes earth like worlds water worlds ammonia worlds and terraformables.
It's also a solid hunter and can be configured as a real killer, it can trade upwards of 100t and can by used in long range smuggling missions.
Brilliant ship.

It looks like you're looking at trading/exploring, and in that context the Asp is by far your best option, and there really isn't anything to compete in that realm, well outside of a Conda. If your looking for more specialized work, say the new courier mission or long haul smuggling, then you have other options. I did the Asp for trading/Exploring and the DBS for Bounty/RES work, and made great scratch while doing pew-pew when bored.

You're on the right path brother, so have fun with your Asp and look forward to your Python purchase in the near future.

I was afraid of this. I headed out into the deep black in a T6 just prior to the 1.2 launch. Got a bit burnt out on ED and decided to take a break. Jumped back in yesterday but from what I've been reading on the forums the T6 and I are in for a challenge once I decide to head back home. Any tips on improving my chances? I'll probably stay out in the deep black for a while, so I have some time to get used to flying in ED again.

Shouldn't be too hard to get your T6 back into a dock. Pick a border system, preferably one with a dock close to the star, and just beeline it. You still won't see many NPCs beyond the border (I saw none at all on my return - just got back to civilization today), so just minimizing the amount of exposure time is your best bet. Tjupali (the system I used) is a border system with the main dock only about 30ls from the star - took me no more than 2-3 minutes to jump into the system and get into the dock's sphere of influence.

Thanks, I'm only about 35 jumps out of Tjupali, and the station there is closer to the star than the border system I had been aiming for (Tai Si). Not sure how much time I'll find this week to play, but thanks for the heads up
