What ship will you be exploring in?

Dunno before seeing them all, but the ASP Explorer was well named in the past games. Ideal size to carry guns, shields, long-range drives, fuel scoop, atmospheric shielding, and have a fair amount of empty cargo space left for hydrogen. Due to the light-ish weight, fuel took you far before you needed to skim a new gas giant. Fond memories of that flat profile, so i'm looking forward to reuniting with it.

Well I don't think that atmospheric shields will be needed initially since we cant land on planets\moons just yet. I may have misunderstood what I heard but I think that fuel is handled a bit differently this time in that it wont take up any cargo space so that frees up some space of other items.

Oh yes, no landing just yet, different fuel, and i'm not sure scooping gas giants will still be a feature. But them's the memories, so that's the ship i'm looking forward to the most right now. :)

Asp Explorer or maybe the Imperial Courier would be my first choice depending on how they handle. The Cobra Mk III is an option as a starting point equipped with long range drives and scanners so you could select that as a starting point (if you backed high enough during the Kickstarter) and just take off!

I will only attempt true deep space exploration with a big ship that can carry a fast fighter type craft in it's hold. I'd prefer my old love the Panther Clipper. But perhaps there is something even better suited.

Are there any details about the 'long range Cobra' or just what was mentioned in the Kickstarter?

All I've seen so far is that explorer versions of ships will have long range fuel tanks (these are built into the hull so you can't add them to normal ships) and they will have self repair abilities to extend service intervals.

The Hull however will not be repairable in this way so you will still be limited in how long you can stay out.

I would also guess at some form of long range sensors capable of scanning unknown destinations as you will need some info to be to be able to make them jump.

Speaking of ships, you'd think that since ED is set 350 years after the original Elite (3350 as opposed to 3000?) that we'd finally see a Cobra Mk IV by now (which could technically be the long range version), as well as updated versions of the other ships?

You'd think wouldn't you... It's the one ship I'd trade in my Mark III for. I mean even just marketing wise it'd make sense to release the IV eventually.
