What should i expect? (noob)

Hi all, First of all apologies if my questions are stupid, its just that I’m a little confused.

I’ve pre-purchased the game to start on the 16th and I’m keen to know what to expect. I’ve seen some conflicting info and I’m keen to get a clear picture in my mind. Some questions I have are:

Is this game an MMO? I’ve seen interviews by the founder on YouTube only a few days old saying it is but I’ve read that is not the case, will I have an occupied galaxy or not? If its only 32 ppl in a 400 billion star galaxy will I ever see anyone?

If I do what is our likely interaction if any? Is there any point in having them there?

When I launch from my ship on day one are there going to be people waiting to gun me down?

I’ve seen some YouTube clips with people upset about the game not delivering, what are they upset about? , They have a rant and don’t seem to explain?

Any insight on what my opening experience will be will be welcome,

By the way I’m not looking for a EVE shootum up? I know the original elite and understand the concept.

Confused from Thatcham.

1) sort of.

2) you do see people.

3) frantically trying to comm them before they drop out of supercruise, saying hi, then losing comms. or being interdicted and blown up by them. unless they're your friend. then you can go pirating together. other players have an effect on the galactic economy.

4) no, there's probably going to be a wipe, so the biggest ship anyone will have is like twice the size of yours (not 100x the size)

5) i don't know why people moan either. the game is good. it's not the most in-depth game for storyline, but it's nice.

6) your opening experience will be flying around a station, bumping into things, taking some missions, grinding some money, getting a bigger ship. there's probably going to be a lot of shenanigans during most of these stages.

7) it's not a shootemup, good choice

The reason MMO is in debate is a misunderstand of what MMO actually means... The point is that all users are in the same universe playing the same game at the same time. Massively Multiplayer Online... so Yes...it is a MMO..
Having said that there is a limitation in the tools available to allow players to actually interact with each other... For example, I see you, we can battle it out... But say we were traveling together, the games is lacking co-p command. Now they ARE working on that, but it's not installed at this time.

The stating location could be in dozens of places, so not likely. Also the stations have a non-attack area around them, you CAN play solo for a bit if you like... means same game, AI only other ship, solo just means no humans can be in the game with you. It is exactly the same game. You can swap back to open public just be logging to the main menu.

@Avnas: They announced yesterday there will be NO wipe and reset.

edit: there's no wipe. expect people in the biggest ship in the game to be outside the station waiting to mow you down with plasma accelerators and railguns.

In the near future, there will be the opportunity to interact with other players (make of missions together). Later, walking around the ship and the planetary landings. ED will be a game, much richer at this time

hehehehehe - I've not even seen a single live player in the last week.

Oh, let me follow up with... Landing is a starter nightmare... expect a learning curse
I find buying VoiceAttack to be better than getting a joystick...

Uhh... no, that never happens. Don't worry.
1. The station is going to blow them up. Also, you are probably fast enough to hyperjump away.
2. People don't really do this since there's no benefit.
3. If all else fails, you can just fly elsewhere in Solo mode and then log back into Open Play.

Is this game an MMO?
Yes and No. It is "Massive" in the number of players playing in the same galaxy. It is "Multiplayer" in a way when you encounter real players / meet up with your friends. But it is not the MMO(RPG) you expect from things like WoW where you see hundreds of players on your screen. To better describe how "MMO' ED is, think of it like a "master galaxy match making server" in which everyone connects to, and then depending on where you are, the match making server will let you know who is around you in your current star system so that you can see them in your game. So, in a sense, all players are kind of ad-hoc connecting with each others when they are "closed" to each others and the master galaxy server will continuously "match making" you. It seems that currently you could only see a maximum of 32 players in your current instance ( or well, basically star system ), once you've jumped into another star system, you will be fed with another set of players who are currently in that star systems and so on.

If you play in Open, it depends on your luck. It's an online game so you can expect anything could happen. If you play in Solo, it also depends on your luck, only difference is, there are going to be only NPC waiting to gun you down without reason...

If you compare the current game features with the DDA, a lot of features are either missing or semi-implemented. I'm not saying the DDA is the promised features but there are a lot of backers input in the DDA with brilliant idea so I can see the disappointments with the current state of the features. To be honest, the current game isn't bad, but far from outstanding in terms of the depth of some of the features. The game is and will be continuously developing and new/polished features will be coming out in the future so ED can only be better and better.

By the way I’m not looking for a EVE shootum up?
In theory yes, the game is not about Elite:Murder. But there will be someone looking for pure shootum up sometimes somewhere in the galaxy so IMO you might encounter such thing (hopefully) occasionally.

When I launch from my ship on day one are there going to be people waiting to gun me down?
Nope. The fact that some people may have bigger better faster ships than you makes no difference.
Someone is always going to have bigger faster better ships. Its not a issue

I’ve seen some YouTube clips with people upset about the game not delivering, what are they upset about? , They have a rant and don’t seem to explain?
Hot topics include: lack of a pause button in mufti player, other players are better than them, other players have more money than them, and the ever popular, other players have better ships than them.

Any insight on what my opening experience will be will be welcome
Awesome. Especially if Santa brings you an oculas rift

You'll get a game that's very very similar to the classic Elite in terms of it's ethos and gameplay, but vastly broader in scope. You'll theoretical be inhabiting the same universe that all the other players inhabit, but depending on your location will probably only occasionally have a passing interaction with another human player. The potential is there for greater things in the future.

What you definitely won't get is World of Warcraft in space ! Thankfully !

When I launch from my ship on day one are there going to be people waiting to gun me down?

Yes. Probably. If you are being griefed, however, you can switch to Solo mode.

I’ve seen some YouTube clips with people upset about the game not delivering, what are they upset about? , They have a rant and don’t seem to explain?

The game is currently a basic framework for Space Exploration, Trading and Fighting. Some features are missing that were in the design documents. Some features feel very basic. Some feel not working. Whether this is enough to upset you and whether the game is enjoyable or not... you better judge for yourself. I do enjoy it.

By the way I’m not looking for a EVE shootum up? I know the original elite and understand the concept.

The basic concept is:
One pilot, one ship, 100 Cr.
In the Milky Way.

Go out and see what is there. Make a fortune, lose a fortune. Make friends, enemies. Take part in the struggles of systems and see the galaxy evolve.

It is not a shoot em up. And you can always play on your own in Solo mode, if you want to, and still have the same influence and galaxy everyone else plays in.

Expect adrenaline.

If you want conflict, you can find it.

Want Space Trucker 6709, you can be a trader.

Want to be an explorer, you got 400billion systems.

If you want conflict, you can find it.

Just supercruise around for a while in solo play, an NPC will no doubt interdict you, or if you're in open play, a person who just does it for the trololols. :)

Try the combat demo now ( do preorder people get this? i pretty sure they do) and get used to the rather nifty flight model .
