Newcomer / Intro What the @@

just got game and i'm in the second or third of the training missions and i'm floating in space and all i can move is camera and fire weapons all the while the NPC ship is hitting me.

Is there something i should click to go into somekind of movement mode?

Did you mash many random buttons and discarded a sudden window telling you something aboyeah whatever just let me shoot? :D
Sounds like you enabled the debug camera. Normally, you have to bind it yourself as there's no default for it aaand probably you have
done this and then forgotten about it. Check that, I'd say.

All i done was start next mission, early impressions so far for me are not good,
admittedly i've only got mouse and keyboard but i'm finding sooo damn hard just trying to keep on target, the ship is rolling at every angle possible while the speed controls are so slow to react,
plus some stuff on cockpit/screen i would like to access but have no idea how to,
i'm getting the sense it's not user friendly, but i will stick with it.

Why can't it be like freelancer just plain and simple flight controls so i can get out there and play it.

This game has very steap learning curve. Some people don't like that and that's fine. This game is a serious space simulator. Don't except to find any "I WIN" button.
First thing you should do is to check all control binds an experiment with them, that way you'll learn all the things you can do with your ship. Then finish every training mission, it will help you understand the game without worry for your hard earned in-game cash.
Also, you can find lots of good tutorials here on the forum, like the one posted above.
Edit: I loved Freelancer and it had some great stuff that this game don't have (yet) but it'a joke compared to this, IMO.

Have you accidentally enabled free look?

Mine is set to middle click on the mouse.

With regard to rolling everywhere, set your mouse horizontal axis to YAW and map ROLL to the D and A keys.

As for real answers you already got a couple. I also suspect you have enabled freelook.
