Newcomer / Intro What to do after getting the economics down?

Hey,

I'm a rather new player. After flying around confused for a bit, I decided to figure out how to make money first. So I fired up the youtube machine, followed some guides and got to sitting in a mining capable ASP Explorer and having 30,000,000+ in my account in 3 evenings. I'll head out to get the mining thing nailed a bit better, but I feel for the beginning, I have what I need: The ability to buy ships fit them from scratch and pay for the insurance, if I blow up.

What now? I don't want to go down the piracy/ganking route, otherwise, I'm not sure yet. What do you guys do other than making more money? Or to ask it another way: What do you make money for other than making more money more efficiently? I know, it is a sandbox game asking me to give it its own meaning, but give me a feeling for the possibilities please :)

Thanks!

First of all, welcome!

There is so much to do. I started bounty hunting, then improving my influence with a minor faction to get better missions, then did a bit of power play, then mining, then exploring.

I'm on my way back from a long exploration and intend to look at some Thargoid and Guardian stuff as I've not seen any yet. Then maybe more exploration (I want to go to Sag A) and then maybe do some more power play.

Truth is there is so much to do. Figuring it all out is the best part for me.

Most of all you'll find your favourite thing to do, like joining up with a wing or Squadron and go hunting. Just enjoy it! 🙂

When I want to shoot stuff I will go to a High or Haz Resource Extraction Site, if I want an even more extreme fight I will go to a Conflict Zone.
At other times depending on mood I will go mining or maybe some freelance trading.
There is always the option to just head off and explore, something I should do more of.
Then there is the hunt for engineering materials, I can take my Orca and spend some fun sessions chasing various Unknown Signal Sources in a system collecting data or materials or even doing some rescue work, or in one of my other ships go visit planets in search of what I can find driving the SRV.

I used to occasionally do missions but that was only to gets ranks or permits.

Check the "what are you up to" thread next door :)

What I am doing right now is running missions for The Dark Wheel (see https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/turning-the-wheel.546088/ ). What I would suggest you could also do, assuming you have Horizons, include:
  • unlocking Engineers and engineering your ship(s)
  • do the Guardian mission from Ram Tah
  • unlock and get a few Guardian modules

Oh, and unless you have a well engineered ship already, don't do the TDW stuff in Open. Our main system right now is LFT 926, which is kind of parking ground and staging area for the PvP crowd in Shinrarta Dezhra next door.

Yeah, you just missed the entire game,
The fun is learning, discovering and slowly gaining resources to improve. By hitting the "I Win" button, all you have is money, and 3 evenings entertainment.
30 million credits is hardly the I win button! Sensible start IMHO. What to do in Elite, let’s see.
(1) Doing missions to get cash and gain rank with the Federation and Imperials. Gaining rank with them unlocks more ships and permits to systems you can visit, like Sol! Lots of variety in missions. Combat, cargo runs, planetary scans, courier, passenger etc. Just check out the mission boards.
(2) Engineering. This is gathering materials and doing various tasks to unlock the engineers in the game who can improve your modules and weapons in many different ways.
(3) Alien sites to explore. Thargoid and Guardian sites exist in the game. You can land near them and use your SRV to explore them and gain some useful things at the same time.
(4) Abandoned bases and crashed ships to find and explore. Each with their own backstory to discover and useful items to collect.
(5) Background simulation. You can get involved in influencing the background simulation and help decide what minor faction controls each system. If interested join a squadron. My squadron Alliance Rapid Reaction Force does BGS and we would happily explain how it runs. We are on Discord and in game on the squadrons tab, right panel or on Inara.
(6) PowerPlay. Like BGS, but this is for major powers for Empire, Federation, Alliance and several independents. Works differently to BGS and there are rewards to gain as well.
(7) Exploring. Get a ship with a decent jump range, Asp X or DBX are good, a detailed surface scanner and SRV and head off into deep space. Lots of things to find, try supercharging your FSD in a neutron Star cone, discover new worlds and have your name on them. Sell your exploration data for cash when you get back to inhabited space.
(8) Combat. Head to Resource extraction sites or Combat Zones and bounty hunt or join the war. Get bounties or combat bonds you can exchange for cash.

Well that will do for now. Good luck and have fun!

Hey y'all,

thanks for all the replies! The "The Dark Wheel/Raxxla"-thing sounds exactly like the kind of emergent game play I really like about sand box games.
I might have a look at it soon.

Otherwise, I think I'll go and outfit a ship for all the basic things one can do and give them a whirl. The background simulation does sound kinda interesting, but I have 0 idea of the mechanics yet. Probably the next thing I'll look up guides for (that and exploring).

Thanks!

Hello and welcome. Get a FLEET CARRIER and worry about the upkeep costs that aren’t a worry at all. It’s what we’re all doing and I don’t see why a newcomer should escape the unnecessary stress we’re all not going through.

I'll do that as soon as I'm good enough at mining to get more than 20 million in my cargo hold before I run out of prospector drones and/or collection limpets ... *sigh

I beg to differ I will just enjoy the imergant opportunities it offers It very pleasant to have every thing in one place when I finished the day job of Trading ,Buikding the influence of my factions, Joining other players in their dreams , Engineering my ships Murdering Anacondas for their loverly materials and my rent is paid for the next 2 years which is 5 times as long as Ive played this wonderfull and liberating vocation:rolleyes:

I wish you’d read the bit of my post that came after the bit you underlined. You might have seen I contradicted that bit.

30 mil isn't win, I agree. It's a top of the line scoop for his Asp is all.

I suggest some bounty hunting. This all ties in since you'll want a different ship for that and hey, an A-rated Vulture should run right around.....25 mil or so. with enough left over for a couple of rebuys
