What to do in this game?

I hope that FD implements (sooner rather than later) things like:
Comets
Super Nova's
Black holes
Quasars
Pulsars
Nebulas
Aliens
Artifacts from advanced civilizations
That will give the galaxy much more diversity for exploration and up the 'WOW, COOL!' factor for exploring.
Also, giving missions for above events would give those events even more purpose..Example: Missions where you need to collect comet tail dust, etc..
Cheers!
This exactly is what I would like to see. +1

I think it's understandable people want more. Space is, after all, a very boring place :) The FD team knows this, but not because beta testers and future customers demand more. They know it themselves and have said on numerous videos that they want to drive the ultimate space experience. But those added features take time, a lot of time. Especially when you have a creative team that cares about attention to detail. It's also why I hope they shelve planetary landings until the very very end, despite they keep bringing it up in their videos. In fact, I would implore they outright cancel that feature now. That is no walk in the park to do right and anything less than right is an injustice to the immersion. Oceans, alien forests, volcanoes, clouds, storms, winter, and life forms doesn't even scratch the surface of that beast of a feature. I would very much appreciate they spend the bulk of their time augmenting the space experience and leave planetary landings to ones imagination. Highly detailed procedurally generated planets with day/night cycles should be the focus of their attention.

Having said that, we as gamers just need to be patient for the full experience to unravel. Pretty much what FD has in place now is the groundwork of the space experience. There's certainly room for more polishing and added content such as new ships, new stations, new procedurally generated worlds, new gameplay features, etc. And those will be addressed as the game progresses (well, pending funding of course), but everything provided in the universe is pretty much the bulk of it. Just fast forward a couple hundred years and picture what we would be doing in space. We live, we entertain, we breed on planets. There's a lot more for us on a planet then there ever will be in space. Space is just a highway from one point to another. Science, trade, mining, piracy, law enforcement, and war would literally be the high points of wanting to be in space. All of which, excluding science, is available in FD in its current form. In time, the gameplay mechanics will be expanded upon to drive further personal involvement. For now though, try to see this game as an immersion and less as a goal-oriented or objective based game. And if you don't own an Oculus Rift, check out what those of us who do have been saying about it. It truly brings a whole new level to the immersion.

Im not looking forward to planet landings in elite. Im sure No man's sky will arrive much earlier and if it delivers will be a great game for exploring planets. I just want more dynamic world and events, things to do that are not static objetcs or a wall of text like this is a game from the 80s.

As for the OR at least for me is very unconfortable to be wearing anything on my head to play. I already made my peace with wearing headphones and thats about it. I tried it and its really not for me,specially cause I have my controlles maped around HOTAS, keyboard and mouse

Unfortunately, the only meaningful long term goal in the game is to upgrade your ship. Why would you upgrade your ship you ask? So you can more easily get more money to upgrade your ship more of course. Sure, there are a handful of professions, each of which offers a way to make money to upgrade your ship. But I wouldn't say they are fun in their own right. As you've observed, missions are a grind after the novelty wears off, as is bounty-hunting, as is mining, as is trading. You can make your own purpose in the game, but I'm not exactly sure what that would be. The only reason to grind is so you can grind more effectively.

The goal of Elite games is to reach the Elite rank. Previously it was achieved through killing other ships. I understand this concept may not be as appealing to you. Fortunately there is plenty of other games and... forums.

From the outside I like the look of this game but I'm kind of struggling to figure out things to do. I've got all the basics down and ran a number of missions but is that pretty much all to the game at the moment? Running mission after mission gets a bit tedious.

Certain missions require to go to a system that's out of my reach - how can I get to them when I have access to a Sidewinder/Eagle?

This is beta, not a game. Much of the content and features are still missing. The Game starts with the release of the Gamma on Nov 22. :D

There simply is no single ONE GOAL (if any) in ED, at least not one that fits in a single sentence.
Start over. :D

Sure! Yo dawg! How about the game which has no goal and players who complain that there is no goal in game because once the goal is not handed to them they don't know what to do.

Let me say I love ED and been playing a lot of it but I do agree with the op.

Theres nothing to do here. I dont need a story or an actual endgame but something meaningful to do.
A sandbox doesnt have story but has rewarding things to do and by this I dont mean achievemnts or upgrades. Someone mentioned skyrim well here is an example: I see thiefs giving trouble to a local traveler aa
nd what do I do? Kill the thiefs and get a thank you from the saved traveler, no reward but the knowledge I had an impact on someon in the world That is inmersion!!!!. The fact that my actions change the world no necesarily giving me anything in return.
You cant do that in elite. Missions are just a bunch of text and when you finish them is just a thank you note and nothing happened. You had no impact on anything it was just text, even so that you can do the same mission over and over and will still show up.
Use my imagination? Come on we are in 2014. This is not the first elite were everything was little dots and text and you had to imagine the rest. I dont want cutscenes I want interaction and some impact on the world.

I was hoping the game would be delayed for adding more content but now gamma is so close that well maybe thats all there is.

I hear this is coming in the final release. An impact by one or many commanders on a whole solar system or even a local cluster that is through completion of missions from injected "storyline" type events

+1. Elite is about the journey, not the destination.

I agree totally

I too do believe that people has lost a very important skill when it comes to gaming. The Sims for instance, has always been about just that. Here's your Sim, here's it's house, now it's your turn. Many people could never get into that aspect of the unlimited sandbox that was offered them. "Okay, I dressed my Sim... now what?"
Maxis bended knee to the modern gamer and made TS4 questbased. Without being superlative, the TS4-forum is set ablaze by the people who feel that the modern gamer's need to be told what to do every step of the way has ruined the franchise.
I find myself agreeing with that.

Excellent point. Minecraft seems to have done OK without an "end game".

To be honest, I really do enjoy, that the Game does not Tell me, what to do, to be sucessfull.
Tonight some of us "secured" the excavation Sites at LP 98 something...... Was fun and very rewarding.

At the moment, we just see a little Part of the hugest sandbox game ever. So have a little patience.
