what to Engineer

With my trusty FDL I am only now starting to get to grips with engineers. I was getting my Elite in exploration and doing trading and it kept me busy. I've decided to go for my Elite combat. Given that the shield nerf isn't happening how should I improve my ship?

What choice do I make for shields? Power plant/ distributor and weapons? Right now I like my huge PA but I've got to admit the huge multicannon is much better against smaller ships!

Should I focus on outright power? Or is efficiency better?

I got my AspX with a top rated FSD but I don't run weapons with that so power and heat has never been an issue.

Would anyone recommend anything other than an FDL for NPC harvesting? I haven't got the tank for a Corvette. I'm not doing PvP because I know I'd get killed in about 10 seconds!

Big question - Norwich City or Notts County?

Obvious stuff first:

Overcharged PP
Charge enhanced PD - not the high charge capacity.
Shields - I've a thermal resistant A grade, but some rave about the prismatic.
Thrusters DD - in a FdL, it's a shame not to.

I see your alternative ships as FGS, FDS and the Python. Plasmas are definitely not the way to go for farming. I run all overcharged gimballed multis with thermal mods corrosive etc and just make sure the Haz is close to a station!

G5 FSD has made my FdL much more user friendly. I can actually go places with it.

Engineered shield boosters are also pretty efficient on a FdL.

But in the end it is G5 for all the modules. :)

Norwich for me! My FDL is a fetching yellow with green lasers!

Thanks for the advice, I've got to learn combat at some point and doing it in a totally overpowered ship seems the way to go!

In case you don't know, prismatic shields are simply one class above what you can normally have, so an FDL would normally have 5A shields (max), but with prismatics you have the same as 6A shields You get them from powerplay, not engineers. You can still get them engineered with the same mods as normal shields, so you can have 6A thermal resistant shields on your FDL, 7A on your Python or 8A on your Corvette.

That sounds well worth the hassle of powerplay actually! The FDL shields are good already, they'd be amazing with that!

I do it in this order:
FSD range increase
Thrusters Dirty Drives on combat ships and Clean on the others
Power Plant Overcharge (max. 3) when I need power Low Emissions on ships with bad heat problems
Power Distributers Enhanced Charge
Then shield, boosters and weapons after your personal tastes

Me not know that - or anything about powerplay which seems very complicated to me. I thought it was a swift recharging thingy. I guess it's a bonus for following the blue-haired wench?

With the last Bi-Weave buff, I rather use them than the prismatics, it takes forever for them to recharge 1kj/s against 11 is a difference in my eyes. Taking resistances into account I get a much more fluid expirience in CZ and extracion sites.
