What to spend your money on ?

I played the original Elite back in the 80's, and since then in the last decade have got my space sim fix via the X-series. Im keeping a keen eye on ED and will most probably purchase after its out and patched, however...

Coming from the X-series where there is real reason to earn money, i.e to purchase a fleet , factories , and ultimately build an empire and fund wars, im a little lost on the options available in ED for what to spend your hard earned cash on!

I mean, typically, i always did, and probably will play as a trader, but apart from upgrading a few things on your ship, or indeed buying another and doing the same, what is the reason for earning money?

I don't think it will be about money. For me it about exploring, Be a bounty hunter or Big bad pirate or that lonely Trader. The money is not everything it just part of the game.

Hopefully in order to progress, compete, complete missions and over come sinks like maitainence money will need to be earned, and not just kind of automatically tick over.
The original Elite was a bit too easy as far as money went I think. I would prefer it if you had to spend a bit of attention to breaking even, otherwise stuff just starts to break and you can't afford to properly fix it. And then the better equipment you need the more effort you need to put into getting those good bounties, or deals, or explore and experiment to find other lucrative opportunities.
Otherwise making money is just a grind.

Thanks for your input. You can see where im coming from though. Im guessing like me, most dont just want a space combat sim, but a space world to lose yourself in, Just upgrading weapons / ships, can lose its appeal eventually. This is where the X-series shines imho, you always need money to progress.
With ED, surely once you have a kitted ship, there seems little incentive to earn any more, apart from of course maintenance and missiles.

to make 'elite' status in any category will tale a lot of money.

as i remember from the original game accruing credits was not a fast process compared to the x-series.

I think money facilitates choice.

We all have an idea of how we want to start our ED careers, but at some point at least some players will want to try something different. One way would be to start a new commander, the alternative is to change the focus of your existing, and that's going to cost. Accruing additional ships and their specific load-outs is resource consuming and you're not doing it just to have more stuff, but to broaden your experience of the game. It provides both incentive and genuine longevity.

Usual issue. In my experience in sandbox games where choice is genuinely afforded: most players eventually choose to grief other players. Speaking personally, I only need money to buy bigger and better guns and harder and faster regenerating shields. I'll then use them to inflict as much misery on others as possible. Because, once you've dispensed with the empty pve, the hunt is pretty much all that's actually stimulating.

This is why I am concerned about group switching. Know thyself and all that. I'll just grind away in the safest option possible and utilize 'social' modes to murder people for amusement. If I can cheat along the way I will. I guess thats just me though ..

. . . what is the reason for earning money?

To spend it - repair bills, ship replacement, fines, bribes, wages for escorts, upgrades, gambling (I hope), charity, investments, taxes, theft, swindles, bling, extortion, status and so on.
Let's hope things are expensive and possibly frustrating when it comes to credits. I'm sure FD will put a lot of thought into the role of money in the game (I mean in game money).
I'm not currently keen on owning space infrastructure but I'm also aware that it could be an excellent idea. As long as such structures could also be destroyed by being attacked.
That would set you back a bit and give something to spend credits on. :)

For the love of swimming, of course

There will be money sinks such as repairs, fuel(?), insurance, ammo, new weapons, new modules etc... New types of ships to buy too which might take a fair while to own them all.
Once the FP/EVA expansion comes out I'm hoping they add another layer of customization, weapons and equipment etc.. so you've got more things to earn money for.

Outside of earning moola there will be different Elite statuses that you can rank up I believe.
There's also faction reputation to consider too, you can spend time doing missions for a certain faction or fighting in their wars to increase your rep.
I hope that what you can buy is linked to your Elite status and reputation and you can buy special customized versions of ships/weapons/modules with the right status and rep.

Elite .. trader? Ok. Earned in some private group? Ok.

I would hope there will also be distinctions between real Elites and the plastic Elites.

There will be probably an Elite High quality Cardboard badge, A Plastic (also high quality) badge, and of course Aluminium, Steel & precious metal badges.
I aim to earn (by reasonably fair means) ALL badges available. ;)
The Diamond studded solid Titanium badge will be the one to aim for I think...if of course one was available.

I'm hoping to start off as a peaceful trader/explorer, but I do so love nice shiny badges unfortunately. ;)

Back to topic, apart from Trading, Upgrading, Combat & Exploration, there will possibly many other features and scenario ideas that are hatching in the minds of the developers, so utilising all of these basic features in some other ways it doesn't take a great deal of imagination to think of 'situations' where these basic forms of play can be manipulated to create new goals for players. David Braben has already hinted at possible future instances that might be the catalyst to ignite prolonged gameplay/interest in the future game. :)

Good thing for us is that trying to engage in 'griefer' behavior will cost a lot of $$ so it will be very difficult to engage in that behavior for any period of time before ones ship is worn out and they can't repair/refuel or just pay of their debts to in game creditors....

Oh, Oh! I'm an Ex Jeweler; If I can see it and get some dimensions, I'm pretty d*&$# good.:D

I'll be saving all my credits for future expansions. Who knows, we might be able to buy capital ships, space stations, specialized utility vehicles, purchase small planetoids to set up tourist traps, etc.

Well, in -6,4 nobody can hear you scream. :p
IIRC I think more than half the stars in Frontier were Anarchy systems. :D
