I ran a similar poll back on the FGE forums a while back. Thought i'd make one here, but this time make it multiple choice and with more options since exploration has had some love since then.

Here is an explanation of options.

Sightseer - your destinations are always nebula or interesting stars that you usually choose before setting off. Exploring systems en-route is not your goal, the destination is the thing.

Wanderer - You rarely have any destination in mind. You just pick a direction and go. You might randomly change direction if you see something interesting along the way.

Surveyor (Lite) - Scan most of the interesting objects in just about every system you visit. Mainly only skipping low value objects.

Surveyor (OCD Edition) - No object shall escape your scan. Ever!

Pinger - you're in and out of systems quicker than the milkman visiting your mum's. You might scan some nearby objects. You're mainly looking though for Earthlikes and other high paying objects.

Tourist - You stick to the old familiar places close to civilization. A journey to the Pleiades is a long trip for you, and you complain about the lack of a decent 5 star hotel when you get there.

First claimer - You're looking for new locations where others haven't been yet. You want your name on as many systems as possible.

Elite Explorer - One of the reasons you are exploring is because you want to get to elite rank in it.

Wanderer, definitely. It's kind of the freedom I get with sandbox games. I put in some music, maybe an album I just bought (still about a dozen from january/february waiting to be heard) and then head out to gods know where.
Not very profitable, even for exploration standards, but it's fun.

I'm not an explorer. However my everyday ship, a Cobra, does have Advanced and Detailed Surface scanners. In the course of my travels (employed as occasional trader, courier, bounty hunter and assassin) if I happen upon a system with UNEXPLORED in the nav panel I just have to scan and get a complete list. No matter how long it takes, I can't be having with UNEXPLORED being there.

What does that make me, on you list?

Ah, nothing like the 80s for music... before it all went commercial and people realised they could make money out 5 girls who could barely sing.

I'm a prospector. That's missing. I scan and seek out new veins of metals and minerals, go in and test them out, and then report and move on. So, exploring backed up with mining.

II usually only scan systems on rares trading. Also when there's an interesting event. Ill scan systems on the say there.

I have a 22Ly jump range so I rarely find undiscovered systems!

damn, didnt know i could check more than 1.. should have read better.

I clicked "1st claimer" though there is a mixed bag of reasons.

I am also making a note of interesting stuff for when I have a dabble with mining later

I went for;

Wanderer - Surveyor (Lite) - First Claimer - Elite Explorer

I'm just having a look around, heading towards HIP 18175 at the moment and seeing if anything catches my eye. I won't scan asteroid belts and far off planets but will generally do every sun, interesting planet and gas giant in a system before heading off.

There is also the loner factor; occupied space is over-rated and I prefer my own company! :)

Pinger or Surveyor (OCD), depending on what you mean by scan.

Surveyor (Lite) seems best fit.

I'm a sightseer primarily, but I fully explore all the systems I visit and will check the Galaxy Map while en route for any interesting detours I can take along the way ;)

Hmm, i think you would call me a Surveyor lite, i call myself a Mapper. 4 weeks before 1.1 i was in a quadrant mapping, skipping icy/rocky low value object but i stayed in that quadrant, i wasnt far from home, 2k-3k ly but still was out 4 weeks. Galaxy is just so big, we could have been 50 dudes there for a month on all xyz and still all get out first discovered.

>Reasons i differentiated myself as a Mapper is because i always read people and their exploration stories, and it's always a circuit of some sort, never seem to be a job or a profession in such. Someone pays to get a part of the galaxy lighted, maybe he wants earth like, maybe something else who knows, It's a job that i do for credit first. At least that's what my "character" does, i know exploring don't pay at all and isnt a viable job in any sense of the word.
