Elite / Frontier What version of Elite 3 is everyone playing?

Id like to have another play and my wishlist is:

- higher res graphics
- good joystick control (sidewinder force feedback 2)
- runs on vista

Any tips?

GLFFE allows for the best resolution, some variants of JJFFE also provide higher-than-standard resolution, but not on par with GLFFE.

I don't use joystick and don't plan to ever use Vista, so I can only offer you my sincere condolences regarding your OS.

Has anyone had any of the versions GLFFE/JJFEE etc... Working on vista?

Thank god Im still on XP but at some point.....

Would be nice to know it they work on M/softs WONDERFUL new OS!!!

Joysticks are quite difficult to use in FFE, due to the absolute precision necessary for combat (that is, manoeuvering towards pixels). A mouse is generally better for playing FFE, I've found.

Further to the above, I have recently installed Vista and everything does run perfectly well (GLFFE, JJFFE, GLFrontier etc). :)

Thats quite a relief, at least we will still be able to contiue to enjoy playing the games (until M/soft brings out their newest system crashing software, or OS as they call it)

the only thing vista dosen't like is full screen dos so if you want to play the first elite you will need an emulator like dosbox

Indeed, although I needed DOSBox to run those old games under XP as well...

At the risk of being ridiculed, I quite like Vista now it's all up and running properly. It took a while to resolve all the little problems with compatibility and there are still a few minor niggles (such as it not allowing certain startup programs) but, all in all, it's not bad :)

No it's not horrible at all, I've been using it at home for more than 6 months however I will say that it is cumbersome and does bog down the longer it's installed.

Yep all versions of FFE work in vista, however cannot get to work in full screen only windowed mode, any ideas?

ps i have amended CFG to start in fullscreen -1

In my cfg file the line reads:-

startfullscreen=1

and further down:-

# Fullscreen parameters
fswidth=1024
fsheight=768
fsprefbpp=8

This should do the trick :)
