What was the point of beta testing 1.3?

Ever since 1.3 went live it has been plagued with issues... 90% of which were issues that were either fixed during the beta test and yet have come back with a vengeance, or never appeared in the beta at all. The near constant disconnections were dealt with in 1.3 beta 2, and yet here we are with the final release of 1.3 after the second patch and the constant disconnections are still rampant. Since patch 2 I have only been able to stay connected on the game for more than 5 minutes once in eight attempts. On top of that, since patch 2 the game has NEVER started first time. After selecting start, solo, the rotating ship does it's thing and then I am met with the "unable to connect to adjudication server" error. When I start the game a second time, I finally get to play it... although like I say, on only one occasion was I able to play for more than 5 minutes before being disconnected again.

What was the point of beta testing if the released version has the same bugs that plagued the initial beta but then were supposedly fixed? Just how much in-house testing do FD actually do? Do they actually have any kind of quality control? If they do, just how inept are they at it? The state of 1.3 is an absolute joke and no development team worthy of the job title would consider this remotely acceptable.

Now, I know there will be the usual band of FD brown-nosers who will berate me for daring to criticise their precious game and their beloved FD, but this has been going on for far too long. Every single time a major update comes along we have to go through this ridiculous charade of the game being nigh-on unplayable for at least the first three patches. How many more times does this have to happen before the Elite: Dangerous community finally says enough is enough? Sort your act out... and the game!

The only way they're ever really going to take fixing it seriously is when "Elite Dangerous Power Play 1.3 Completely Broken" lands on the front page of Engadget, Gizmodo, PC Gamer, etc.
Because that makes shareholders nervous. Nervous shareholders tend to dump stock in companies they're nervous about, which drags down the price of the stock and loses FDev money.
It's all about money in the end. Make them start losing a lot of it in the markets and they'll start pushing more devs in to fix it, test it, and fix it again.

The problem I see is the beta testing environment was much smaller than release. Most of the problems I'm having are conneciton, code or rubber banding related which I put down to all the extra players and content having to load and work in the background. Generally 1.3 has been stable and excellent for me, one of my Wingmen rages a lot on Skype!

Reviews are always good for Elite and note it's bug and problems... see PC Gamer and EuroGamer.

What bugs me is that PP beta was super short, we were all surprised to see PP released so quickly. And now PP is the most bugged version of ED.
So question: why is FD rushing things to deli er something clearly broken and unpolished? I mean there is a beta, it should count for something!

My take on this is that since PP was introduced the servers have come under increasing loads created by all the new 'Power Play' transactions that must me taking place every second and they struggle to cope with this at peak times which causes short term loss of connections or failed transactions. Course I could be completely off the planet with my thinking (pun intended). :)

I guess we'll have to continue guessing as FD don't seem to want to disclose what's going on, as usual. Which is ironic, as a simple 'this was the issue' statement would probably calm things down just fine.

Kornelius Briedis just released this little rant: http://youtu.be/eQKe7gvAVSU

As for most of us, the rushed release of PP came as a total surprise...there I was, hoping for an extra 2 weeks of beta testing!
I wonder how many beta testers are still around anyway.
When I take a look at my - rather extended - friendslist ingame, I only see around 10% still playing on occasion...most of my friends are original beta testers.

"How can I become a beta tester"...we all have seen threads by new cmdrs, asking for this.
Why not give them access, if they really want to.
Maybe without the bonus of that extra skull decal and insurance cost reduction we got (because we paid more prior to release).
Because it looks like the original beta test crowd is getting less motivated, to get involved with each new beta.

Whilst i agree the game is buggy, I think a lot of maths is involved here as well. Say 200 doing Beta testing, each testing an aspect of the game. Launch the update and 200,000 people test it. I aint no genius but I know which population will discover more bugs.
