Elite / Frontier What was your most spectacular mis-jump?

As far as I know, mines were always just around 5-10 light years away from the intended destination - have you made bigger misjumps?

Hi!

Only deliberately. Any accidental misjumps I've had in Frontier have destroyed my engine/craft or just landed me in bare space, another jump away from the target system.

However, with forced mis-jumps, you can end up over 1,000 light years from your target system. I did some research into this, and sent it to the Frontierverse site. My results are in the email quoted at the bottom of this page:

The Real Outsider

I cant recall how big my mis-jump was, but long ago I was fruitlessly searching for the fabled "secret ship" in Frontier Elite 2. My travels (with a modded Sidewinder) had taken me (I think) to the Western Spiral Arm, might have been the Eastern Arm, it was a long time ago .

As there is a lack of ports out there on the rim my drive was in need of a service.

Anyways, the mis-jump inevitably happened and I actually ended up outside the galaxy! Luckily for me, with the extended range of the Sidewinder, I was able to find a port to get the drive serviced. But there were many other times the drive was destroyed during mis-jumps, leaving me trapped in inter-stellar space. Hit the re-load key :(

Its a myth, that even David himself perpetuated.
"fly to the edge of the galaxy" which edge, I mean c'mon.

You can see them on photo and nuke missions sitting at the bases but you can't fly them, only way to get it is to hack the game, google can help you find a saved game with one ready to fly.

Oh and get a Sirius corp user Ident, hur hur hur.

Ah, the good old Mirage, aka - FE2 Thargoid ship. IIRC the hack savegame had the person who made it call the ship the "Starblade" or something similar.

I don't think I've ever done much experimenting with misjumps, but I'm sure it would be fun in FFE with the Quest or the Unknown...

.

Which is of course a great way to get people playing your game a lot!

You couldn't do it in these days of the internet though, as you can be sure every single system will have been scoured and reported on within a week of release.

With Frontier's size not even the Internet would help.

I once made a calculation.

I don't remember the exact result, but visiting every system once with only a minute spent in each and no other activities, like refueling, combat or maintenance would take well over a thousand years (I'm not sure if it wasn't more along the line of six thousand) of non-stop playing.

Size Matters

That was the great thing about the Elite series. There was the potential (with that multitude of star systems) to hide lots of cool things throughout the game in far off systems. This is something I am hoping to see in Pioneer once it is finished. You could have 1000s of community created goodies hidden away in the game for you to discover.

You can't reach any edge of the galaxy in Frontier anyway, not without a hacked ship that is.

Your drive will fail due lack of maintenance before that.

about ten years ago I was thinking of taking an old A600, install Frontier, get a modded Sidewinder, accelerate it up to maximum speed towards "the edge of the galaxy", set the speed skip on maximum and just let it sit there 24/7 and fly for as long as possible to see where it got me. It would have been fun to see where I would have been now if I really gone through with it. :)
(I tested once to fly between two sun systems that way... took several weeks if I recall correctly)

I had no idea there was even a mechanism for galactic travel without hyperspace. I am further impressed!

*EDIT*
How would you know in which direction to point your ship though?

How would you know in which direction to point your ship though?

I used the targeting tunnel on a sun in another sun system and put the autopilot on it... then I accelerated the ship to as fast as possible without using all the fuel (entire cargo bay with extra fuel). After that I turned off the engines and let the ship drift in maximum accelerated time skip. When I noticed that the ship was a little off course I used the auto pilot to correct the heading and then turned off the engines again. I believe I had the correct to heading about 15-20 times.

I managed to fly through the system I had targeted. Unfortunately most of the systems in the ship was broken due to lack of service, so I couldn't stop the ship. But it was fun to have tested it and succeeded. :)
