What We Want vs What We Need

We don't want to lose our data when exploring. We don't want to lose all our wealth when we dump it into one run. We don't want to risk losing millions when we get shot up in a rez. We don't want to spend hours or days or weeks or months travelling (well some of us don't).

But we need these things. If anything, Elite:Dangerous goes too far in protecting us. Don't get me wrong, I'm of the ilk that believes high security systems should have high security and anarchy systems should be avoided unless you're ready to fight. But that's not what I'm talking about here.

I think that certain things in the game should be risky. Without risk, there's no sense of achievement. I see a lot of threads with people asking for things (saving exploration data is an example that sticks in my mind as an explorer) that would be detrimental to us. I've lost my ship a few times, but I've also had epic wins, like when I first flew a T9 and the first few runs it was without shields or rebuy as I made my way up into the safety zone as I worked towards my first anaconda.

The game should have risk. The game shouldn't be easy.

PS. NPC ship's crew is wanted and needed.

PPS. Of course it's my opinion. I speak for myself. However *I* think that what we want isn't what we need ;)

What YOU want vs What YOU need.. Fixed it for you, cuz I thought you might be presuming to speak for the entire player base :D

I agree on this aswell.
As for people asking for saved data/exploration data that makes no sense to me its like if you have all your important work files saved on your computer or laptop then randomly it bows up what happend to all that data well its all gone you lost everthing same goes for your ships :p

game inconsistency, materials don't get lost, data do get lost, Money doens't get lost as well (aside rebuy). Cargo gets lost. Hired NPC's get lost.

Yes, I'm just nearing Sag.A* at the moment. The thing that makes a long trip interesting is the buzz of possibly losing it all. I've neutron-jumped on the way out, but I don't think I'll be willing to do that on the way back. Colonia is an interesting dilemma: should I turn aside there to hand in data, or is it more interesting to return by a less-travelled path with better first-discovery chances? I also fancy heading up to the top of the galaxy to get a panoramic view. I'll probably do that, but will have to beware of risky jumps.

Interesting dilemmas make for good game-play. If data couldn't be lost, many of them would disappear.

Risk? yes please!
Losing weeks of progress? Absolutely not!

Thing is, there are methods to lower the cost/risk of losing a ship, even in open.

Don't go in big around CG's. Take a ship you're sure about you can afford losing. Before going on a long exploration trip, part you biggest bad- ship somewhere at the edge of the bubble and make sure to start/end your exploration trip there. Swap back to other well defended ship when flying to the system you'd want to turn in your data. Also, always have defences, whatever you're planning to do unless you really don't care.

But this is also a state-of-mind.
For a lot of times, it's so lonely out there, you might think nothing can hurt you.
It's incredibly easy to get way too comfortable.

Be prepared.
Stay prepared.
But, yeah, easier said than done.

These are discussion forums for people to expression their opinions. No one thinks JeffRyan is trying to speaking for everyone (including Jeff, it would seem). These "YOU DONT SPEAK FOR ME" attacks are truly tedious, and bring nothing to the discussion. If you dont agree with him, say why (or don't, your choice), but please stop wasting our time with dull, tedious posts that contribute to nothing other forum toxicity. (Just my opinion, of course).

I agree btw...now the fun bit...

What I want is frilly skirts and size 12 stilettos...what I need is professional help and medication ^

Please post what you want and don't speak for the majority! Thank you!
For all you know, JeffRyan is a collective intelligence and actually CAN speak for all of us... now don't you feel foolish?

Oh, and totally agree. Too many modern gamers make me sad with their inability to accept risk vs reward. I know gaming is a break from life, but if you want everything handed to you, play minecraft on creative. Maybe they can get an elite dangerous texture pack...

More risk of loss please, but more gameplay to avoid it if you so wish.

Such as;
NPC crew death, yes they should die, but only if you don't go back and rescue them. They can be floating around, rescued, kidnapped, etc.

Yes, lose Exploration data on death, but you could try and recover your own blackbox, same for bounty vouchers. This could be "stolen" by NPC's, leading to missions.

Lose you ship without rebuy? Yes, total loss. Or visit a shady loan shark and get a loan to cover the cost, at an extortionate interest rate, and you need to work for them, and late or non payments, or running away will send ships after you. Constantly.

The point is, you can have as much risk as you want, if you create gameplay loops to make up for it.
