What weapon are these NPC Couriers using?

Twice again today I found myself being attacked by couriers and each time they used a laser type weapon (I assume) which just kept on chipping away at my shields whilst I did a KWS on them. They didn't get through the shields but it seemed strange to have that multiple shot per second just chipping away. Is this likely to be pulse lasers? I have never used pulses since my first sidewinder so I can't tell if the rapid fire is from that. It can't be multicannon because they don't do the shields do they? Glad to hear any info, it is just intriguing - not important.

Burst lasers, perhaps?

Sounds like short bursts of laser fire in tight groups of three.
