Newcomer / Intro What weapon set is more viable for my Eagle

Greetings, commanders!

I am not very experienced pilot yet, so, I need help with choosing proper weapons for my Eagle. I want to be more or less universal bounty hunter, but now it is very hard to deal with bigger ships (Cobra and bigger) with my basic Pulse Lasers. I choosing among following sets:

1). 2*Gimbal Pulse Laser against shields + 1*Gimbal Multi-cannon against hull.
2). 3*Gimbal Multi-cannon - I've never used them. How good it can be against shields?
3). 2*Gimbal Pulse Laser against shields + 1*Dumbfire Missile Rack against hull.
4). 2*Gimbal Multi-cannon + 1*Dumbfire Missile Rack - if Multi-cannons are good against shields.

Can any one help me to choose? Universality is my main goal. Are Point Defence Turrets common enough to give up Dumbfire Missiles? Are Point Defence Turrets good enough against Dumbfire Missiles?
Is there other good options? Torpedos? Burst Lasers? Fragment Cannons?

I will be grateful for any help.

I'd say that 1) and 3) are good options, but the thing here is that noone will be able to tell you to fit this or that and be done with it, the best way is still to try it out yourself and see if you like it. This way you'll get some good practice in and if there is anything in this game you can't get enough of, it's piloting skill.

My own first setup was twin burst lasers against shields and single multicannon against hull.

When I noticed the power draw on the bursts was a little high, I switched to one spine-mounted burst laser and twin multicannons, and it worked fine against every opponent up to pirate Cobras.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Use the burst laser to bring down the shields, then switch to multicannons until they have to reload. Fire the burst laser until they have reloaded (it is pretty good against hull and subsystems both), then use the mc's again.

Always target the FSD or power plant. FSD if you want to prevent your enemy escaping. It's also worth taking out the enemy's drives first.

You might also be able to use beam lasers. Might have to manage your power a bit, though.... if you don't know how to do that, watch this video:

If you are thinking of using the dumb fire missile exploit... do it now... post 1.1 they lose the OP value they currently have...

Personally I would go 2 x fixed burst lasers (shields) + 1× gimballed multi cannon (hull & sub systems)

....just because a lot of chaff is being shoved out at the moment. .. even by NPC's

I have been using (right now) what this guy says. 2 Gimbaled Burst on Bottom and a Gimbaled Multicannon on top. If you are good at aiming I would recommend fixed Lasers on bottom.

I'm using one fixed beam laser on top (with a B2 powerplant I can fire it at will) for hitting the shields and 2 fixed Multicannons under ( for the challenge and because they hit harder than gimballed if you shoot at close range ) Added a chaff launcher and a shield cell bank for security. So far so good, hunting at Nav Beacon I stole some big game (Python, Anaconda) from the Authorities by joining the fight once they have it down to 25%. I go alone for anything up to a Cobra, got my bottom handed to me by an Adder once. (12.4 K Cr Insurance)
As I am also in World War 1 flight sims, I'm used to shoot only under 200m... :)

I flew with twin fixed pulse lasers and a gimballed multi cannon for a while, but found that the lasers were always out of power so the MC was doing all the work.

I now fly with two gimballed multi cannons and a gimballed pulse laser up top. You lose a bit of punch with gimballed weapons, but gimballed weapons that hit do a lot more damage than fixed weapons that miss. The Eagle is not tough and I want fights over with ASAP.

How do you target subsystems? I did not know you could do that. :)

You can use the left targeting panel, or bind the next/previous subsytem to a button and scroll back and forth.

If you have a bit of skill and a decent control setup, I'd recommend fixed weapons over gimballed. You have to keep them on target, but they do a bit more damage, use less power and can't be thrown off by chaff. I used to run two fixed beam lasers and one fixed rail gun on a fully upgraded Eagle. Was lots of fun. Now I'm working on my Viper's configuration.

My fixed multicannons don't miss as I use them at close range only and they do more damage than gimballed... ;)

Thanks a lot for your replies!

I was misleaded by in-game numbers of damage and DpS of gimbaled mounts vs fixed ones (they are same!). So, if fixed versions does more damage than gimbaled ones, then I have to try both and find out what is more suitable for me. Also, in-game description says that Burst, Beam and Pulse Lasers has same DpS numbers, but I've heard that Burst and Beam Lasers are more powerful than Pulse Lasers. Is it true?

And one more question:
Does power distribution on weapons affect performance of kinetic weapons (for example: Multi-cannons)?

Simply use 2x gimballed pulse on the lower slots and either a gimballed cannon or dumb fire launcher on the top.

Don't get hung up in gimballed versus fixed weapon discussions. A weapon does zero damage unless it hits...

The main reason I use fixed weapons is that it makes the fight more challenging, and more fun. Gimballed are too easy against the poor NPCs ... :)

I am all for challenge and everything, but if the reward doesn't equal the challenge, i see no point in the challenge and honestly, i don't think you would choose the more difficult choice just because it is more difficult and more fun....if you could collect a 100k bounty from a ship that is easy to beat or 100k from a challenging enemy.......you would pick the harder target? seriously?

Fixed beam lasers all the way. Most damage, no need for ammo, and simply just fun. If you can't afford beams, go fixed pulse :)
