First off, the reddit link isn't my post.
Second, I feel he's very spot on, in the most cynical way possible.
If you break down any game, it's just "push this button - watch this animation." Yet, how can I spend HOURS. And I mean, HOURS, smithing in Skyrim? lol
This is the most amazing space flightsim I've ever played. Evochron Legacy, Evochron Mercenary, Starmade, Kerbal -
Too bad it isn't the greatest at being a game. For Sci-Fi spaceship captaining, I have to say it's still X-Wing
As a whole though, the sim wins. Last night, I finally was able to FA: 0ff out the station, align my ship with my trajectory and JUMP and it was AMAZING.
I love Elite. Out of them all, this is the one I really hope works and makes it to maturity.
please, please take note of this guys' comment.

and this is arguably the most cynical and jaded look at the game I've come across, including stuff I've come up with myself.
about my story:
I first became interested back in Kickstarter. I've backed both Elite and Star Citizen. Why?! Because it's g David Braben and Chris Roberts making Space Sims again!
I then became really excited after watching Isinona's videos and reading Kotaku's article on the First Great Expedition.
What did I get though? As far as gameplay mechanics?
I honk a horn, stare at planets.
wow. (now hear me out, this gets interesting)
so I went to check out "bounty hunting" and found because of the P2P, it's hopeless to try and bounty hunt a player. They just combat log, or worse are hackers to begin with. So I hunted them, still and created a high-alpha carnage of death Cobra back pre 1.3. Medium Rails, torpedo, and a beam. All in a silent running, FAST, rouge-like package. I was "Batman in space." (Thanks Isinona and a few other YT)
what did I get for "reward"? A couple weeks later those same players hacking me, attacking me, on Facebook, in TS groups, on forums, and on Reddit. I had to change my profile name in-game 7 times in 9 weeks. They weren't attacking my Commander. That would have been FUN. They were attacking ME.
So I went into a more PvE type of gameplay with a new profile character - Iure Solus: daring shady shiester of the Imperium! I ran Imperial Slaves, battle weapons, armor, etc to systems that according to my research and thanks to the work of the Dukes of Mikuun and others, was flipping systems for the Empire! I was basically "Lord of War" in space at that point.
1.4 came out. People exploited. People always do especially when things aren't fully tested in alpha/beta stages, and what happened?
my little local runs in the Empire (I had just gotten my iCourier too and upgraded from my Adder) VANISHED!!
FDEV had to nerf smuggling. It also affected my missions at the bulletin board 500ly away - I was in the New Yembo area I believe.
I stopped playing the game at that point. My PC started going on the fritz, it had some RAM issues. And because of the game's "development" with powerplant upgrades, hull, and loosing my "Career" I just lost motivation to bother fixing my PC or playing the game.
A few months later, that "itch" returned.
For the record, I didn't buy Horizons. I didn't want to pre-order for "landing on planets." Honestly though, if 2.1 was first, I would have bought the season pass back in November. I just want to make my "statement" of what matters to me. When 2.1 releases, I'll realistically get Horizons. IF season 3 is roleplaying stuff? -
I'll g buy into the BETA!!! I really hope so too, seeing how this season develops.
I tried out looking for groups to play with, I wanted to see what the "end-game" of playing with a team would be like. I had reset my profile. CMDR Iure Solus was no more. I didn't like what that character had developed into. He was just a "meta-grind" type going for "everything." I'm not a "unlock" kind of gamer, I'm an immersive type of gamer. I am proud of my "ELITE" in Exploration though.

What did I get? Well, in some cases outright hostility. Because of other people's actions, very similar to the pain I endured, people are all-together untrustworthy. I don't blame them either.
So, luckily, the Teamspeak for Zachary Hudson gave me a chance. I'm a Federation pilot now, and glad too. I enjoy the Fed ships more than the Imperials. I just like the looks of the "doorstops" vs the "Apple3302".
What am I doing right now though? Ironically, I'm going for ELITE in Exploration again. In an Asp Scout, because that ship makes ZERO sense. I'm so against "meta" now, I had to fly it. She's funky. She's expensive. She makes absolutely ZERO SENSE. And guess what? I actually quite enjoy her. She's amazing in Supercruise. Why she costs 10X more than a DBS, ViperIV, or CobraIII, I'll never know. She can't even have all the things necessary for a Horizons specc'd explorer:
fuel scoop
AFMU
Shields
ADS
DSS
SRV bay
... it just makes me shake my head. Two class two compartments, taken up by class 1 thingies. THAT is one of the things I think is a manner of "borked." It may be "working as intended" but if I have the cubic space for 2T. I should be able to fit two 1T things in there.
Why am I going exploring though? Finding outfitting is a PITA. If I unlock that system SD, I get it ALL. If I do it with exploration, I get about 160MIL in the bank with a relatively cheap ship to start with ( I could have easily done this with a Hauler) and going out into the Neutron Star fields? I can do it in under the time it takes to "grind out" a Trade Anaconda.
so for me - is there content?
obviously.
but come on. Something about it is just stale, even to me. This, coming from someone who gets drunk in AC4. Who has more hours in AC4, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, and Sid Meyer's Pirates, than arguably the 10 years it's taken for those games to release, the sleep I should have had, and the degrees I had earned.
*META* - to me, is the way it's coined in Dungeons & Dragons: you do things because you think you "should" not necessarily because your character knows about all those actions, or knows what's actually the "right" choice. AKA in Elite, it'd be "grinding out" that Imperial Rank when you're a Federation or Alliance pilot, just to have that Cutter for better cargo.
tl;dr - it's cool. I'm just on a soapbox. I feel it's more productive here than on Reddit, Facebook, or my blogs. And it's much more social than just in my journal. I LOVE Elite. But damn if things don't drive me bonkers as well.
