"What Went Wrong" or also know as "my 0.02 on why I LOVE it, why I HATE it."

First off, the reddit link isn't my post.
Second, I feel he's very spot on, in the most cynical way possible.

If you break down any game, it's just "push this button - watch this animation." Yet, how can I spend HOURS. And I mean, HOURS, smithing in Skyrim? lol

This is the most amazing space flightsim I've ever played. Evochron Legacy, Evochron Mercenary, Starmade, Kerbal -

Too bad it isn't the greatest at being a game. For Sci-Fi spaceship captaining, I have to say it's still X-Wing

As a whole though, the sim wins. Last night, I finally was able to FA: 0ff out the station, align my ship with my trajectory and JUMP and it was AMAZING.

I love Elite. Out of them all, this is the one I really hope works and makes it to maturity.

please, please take note of this guys' comment.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/4e61fr/what_went_wrong_elite_dangerous/d1xng0b

and this is arguably the most cynical and jaded look at the game I've come across, including stuff I've come up with myself.

about my story:
I first became interested back in Kickstarter. I've backed both Elite and Star Citizen. Why?! Because it's g David Braben and Chris Roberts making Space Sims again!

I then became really excited after watching Isinona's videos and reading Kotaku's article on the First Great Expedition.

What did I get though? As far as gameplay mechanics?
I honk a horn, stare at planets.

wow. (now hear me out, this gets interesting)

so I went to check out "bounty hunting" and found because of the P2P, it's hopeless to try and bounty hunt a player. They just combat log, or worse are hackers to begin with. So I hunted them, still and created a high-alpha carnage of death Cobra back pre 1.3. Medium Rails, torpedo, and a beam. All in a silent running, FAST, rouge-like package. I was "Batman in space." (Thanks Isinona and a few other YT)

what did I get for "reward"? A couple weeks later those same players hacking me, attacking me, on Facebook, in TS groups, on forums, and on Reddit. I had to change my profile name in-game 7 times in 9 weeks. They weren't attacking my Commander. That would have been FUN. They were attacking ME.

So I went into a more PvE type of gameplay with a new profile character - Iure Solus: daring shady shiester of the Imperium! I ran Imperial Slaves, battle weapons, armor, etc to systems that according to my research and thanks to the work of the Dukes of Mikuun and others, was flipping systems for the Empire! I was basically "Lord of War" in space at that point.

1.4 came out. People exploited. People always do especially when things aren't fully tested in alpha/beta stages, and what happened?
my little local runs in the Empire (I had just gotten my iCourier too and upgraded from my Adder) VANISHED!!
FDEV had to nerf smuggling. It also affected my missions at the bulletin board 500ly away - I was in the New Yembo area I believe.

I stopped playing the game at that point. My PC started going on the fritz, it had some RAM issues. And because of the game's "development" with powerplant upgrades, hull, and loosing my "Career" I just lost motivation to bother fixing my PC or playing the game.

A few months later, that "itch" returned.

For the record, I didn't buy Horizons. I didn't want to pre-order for "landing on planets." Honestly though, if 2.1 was first, I would have bought the season pass back in November. I just want to make my "statement" of what matters to me. When 2.1 releases, I'll realistically get Horizons. IF season 3 is roleplaying stuff? - :D I'll g buy into the BETA!!! I really hope so too, seeing how this season develops.

I tried out looking for groups to play with, I wanted to see what the "end-game" of playing with a team would be like. I had reset my profile. CMDR Iure Solus was no more. I didn't like what that character had developed into. He was just a "meta-grind" type going for "everything." I'm not a "unlock" kind of gamer, I'm an immersive type of gamer. I am proud of my "ELITE" in Exploration though.

What did I get? Well, in some cases outright hostility. Because of other people's actions, very similar to the pain I endured, people are all-together untrustworthy. I don't blame them either.

So, luckily, the Teamspeak for Zachary Hudson gave me a chance. I'm a Federation pilot now, and glad too. I enjoy the Fed ships more than the Imperials. I just like the looks of the "doorstops" vs the "Apple3302".

What am I doing right now though? Ironically, I'm going for ELITE in Exploration again. In an Asp Scout, because that ship makes ZERO sense. I'm so against "meta" now, I had to fly it. She's funky. She's expensive. She makes absolutely ZERO SENSE. And guess what? I actually quite enjoy her. She's amazing in Supercruise. Why she costs 10X more than a DBS, ViperIV, or CobraIII, I'll never know. She can't even have all the things necessary for a Horizons specc'd explorer:
fuel scoop
AFMU
Shields
ADS
DSS
SRV bay

... it just makes me shake my head. Two class two compartments, taken up by class 1 thingies. THAT is one of the things I think is a manner of "borked." It may be "working as intended" but if I have the cubic space for 2T. I should be able to fit two 1T things in there.

Why am I going exploring though? Finding outfitting is a PITA. If I unlock that system SD, I get it ALL. If I do it with exploration, I get about 160MIL in the bank with a relatively cheap ship to start with ( I could have easily done this with a Hauler) and going out into the Neutron Star fields? I can do it in under the time it takes to "grind out" a Trade Anaconda.

so for me - is there content?
obviously.

but come on. Something about it is just stale, even to me. This, coming from someone who gets drunk in AC4. Who has more hours in AC4, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, and Sid Meyer's Pirates, than arguably the 10 years it's taken for those games to release, the sleep I should have had, and the degrees I had earned.

*META* - to me, is the way it's coined in Dungeons & Dragons: you do things because you think you "should" not necessarily because your character knows about all those actions, or knows what's actually the "right" choice. AKA in Elite, it'd be "grinding out" that Imperial Rank when you're a Federation or Alliance pilot, just to have that Cutter for better cargo.

tl;dr - it's cool. I'm just on a soapbox. I feel it's more productive here than on Reddit, Facebook, or my blogs. And it's much more social than just in my journal. I LOVE Elite. But damn if things don't drive me bonkers as well.

Only read some bits and pieces.

But I think Redditor is missing a lot of things:

One example and I'm out:
I notice that he says that supply and demand don't do anything for trading.
But I know You can push the BGS around by buying stuff depending on the demand.
So if the game you are playing is to push the BGS around, then you need to watch that stuff.

I suspect there's a lot of stuff that works like that.
It doesn't directly affect your credit or rank grind so you dismiss it.
But it's doing SOMETHING. And if you care about that thing, if that's your game then that's what you see.

I suspect a lot of the content is like that.
Easy to miss.

This lady at work was telling me about something and she said:
"Surely you've heard of it - there's an advertising all over the Internet for it"

And I pointed out to her that the ads she sees are based on her searches. I see completely different advertising. The game is like that too.
You see what you are looking for.

The asp scout is a very agile ship, with perfect HP placement, fairly durable, fine jumprange and enough power to go for four rails. Tired of gimballed clippers shooting at explorers in maia? Bring an Asp Scout, double chaff and have fun. Internals are fine: you dont need an AFMU unless you go 10k LY or further, and in those cases you wont bring an Asp Scout anyway. Best of all: it has the best PD of all 2 small/2 medium HP ships. You can boost whenever you want, which in combination with its agility gives you a pretty cool dogfighter.

Stats are pointless, just fly it. :p

Im in a group that plays the background smulation I dont have as much time as I would like to play but playing e bgs is a fun game BUT what it most makes me miss is in the original they were going to have procedurally generated space stations when they abandoned them at the time I sort of shrugged my shoulders. However I think they made a huge mistake as as groups you could work on not only expanding your faction but aslo upgrading the space stations. This would have added variety to human space as well kept areas would have had better and more well equpt stations. Abandoned aress could have had disused rusty hulks. As you arrived you may have been instantly able to tell whether it was a good place to buy weapons or get a good trader etc. It would have allowed them to add modules over time etc etc. So with hindsight a mistake. But yeah playing the bgs is not bad and everybtime I go in for a few hours I always love it even if it oddly doesnt mean that im desperate tomtry it the next day.

Oh no. My friend's very much into being a tax collector.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFBOEVY9Dck

I stand corrected.

These brave souls deserve better income for performing their public service.

Absolutely. Especially since they provide a valuable protection service to everyone who pays their taxes. Being a civil servant is a thankless job that doesn't pay well. :(

I am genuinely an irl tax officer (don't hate me, we're human too...) and I approve of this message. :D

Haha, I love how Piracy isn't even considered a profession!

This is great!
always one that's ever biased towards Piracy eh Fang? That's okay, and sorry I didn't mention it. I just enjoy piracy in AC4 more since it reminds me of my tall-ship sailing days. I simply forgot. I do enjoy performing actual bounty hunting going after you...
pirate! You're without a doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of
...

now beyond that, I do have my "Queen"
http://coriolis.io/outfit/anaconda/...ZgRg4CY-uozJQFnY0wg==?bn=Queen Anne's Revenge
I'm sure you'd find her ship-shape ;)

I may not have many posts, but that doesn't mean I don't read here. Good to see you active! O7

I 100% agree. Make no mistake, this is actually a love thread more than a "driving me bonkers" kind of deal. I think the game can be very complex. I love working the BGS.

that's what I've come to notice as well enjoying her. I've gone out 9Kly with her. And I intend to head back out and get to those neutron star fields. In that scout. I also posted about her in the "ships" section if you want to join in there, have a pint, and such. It's fun looking at what's "on paper" vs what we actually feel when we're in something.

a lightweight shield-tanked Clipper with A-rated thrusters definitely doesn't feel "2" in maneuverability... but then again, maybe that's because I enjoy Corsairs and F-14s in other sims lol

I wish that happens in the future as well. I'm really hoping No Man's Sky is more complex and varied than anything we've ever seen. Their art direction is letting them go that way. If this is considered a "hard science" sci-fi sim, that's definitely a "Fantasy based" Sci-fi game. And with a long-term development plan, I can't help but feel FDEV is paying attention to the others cropping up. They have a reputation to uphold lol. They're the "original" Space-sim junkies.

Absolutely. Especially since they provide a valuable protection service to everyone who pays their taxes. Being a civil servant is a thankless job that doesn't pay well. :(

LMAO :D :D :D :D

btw, nice photoshop of femShep ;)

The scout should have more to recommend it. It's basically a side-grade to the almighty DBS as far as combat and exploration go.

We're the IRS vigilante.

On a serious note, we do have black market stat, plus the coming beta will have engineers that look specifically at criminal activities of a player.

There really ought to be a 'criminal' rank that includes black-bag operations, smuggling, and piracy. Otherwise it's kind of nebulous; exactly how many murders/assassinations and smuggled/stolen goods do you need to qualify as a career criminal?

THAT I can't wait for. seriously. My old smuggler profile will have to be used again lol

I 100% agree with all of the above. I know of someone who does long range smuggling in a python, not for "meta" but because he lives out his "Baby Face Nelson" dreams lol. He literally lets the cops interdict him and then he just goes to town lol. He seriously is going berserk over the large tommy- I mean multicannons.

The Asp Scout seriously needs another class 4 compartment. And about 80% cheaper starting price to be remotely "competitive." But beyond that, she's the first ship I ever got to align my trajectory at the jump, from the station pad, all in FA: 0ff. So either I'm becoming a better pilot, or there's something "special" in her fuel lol

I think I'm a full pledge criminal at this point considering my involvement with being an official of The Code, an affiliate of SDC, former/first coordinator for Archon Delaine.

I wonder who has more of a lore-friendly criminal record than myself .-.
