What will you do differently in your next colony?

I'll get a bigger system, I think, with more space but hopefully still just one star, or two stars close to each other (less than 1,000 LS apart). By that time we'll have a better idea how 'facility economy' and 'system economy' influence works.

I'm really enjoying building out my current one honestly, and soloing a planetary port is going to keep me occupied for a very long time. I wouldn't do anything different in my setup (I preferred building the Coriolis first, regardless of where it ends up) other than try my hand at a different economy. That said I probably won't build another system unless I can pick one in my favorite spot in the black without having to chain to it first. Maybe if I find some other people to play the game with I'd consider another one and I do enjoy helping other solos with random gift drops, but I'll want to get back to exploring for a bit soon.

I won't start with an Orbis as my primary port! The commodities and restricted timeframe to get it completed are crazy. An outpost sounds like a much better idea...

There won't be a next colony.
I got a colony before the first colonisation shutdown, and lets say ive not been looking forward to its reenabling, althought making my mark on the galaxy by claiming a system and building it up is a great concept, and its own i suspect it carries the current frenzy of colonisation and my first claim, execution is godawful, even mission hauling is more engaging than this.

If you have a fleet carrier to load up, estimate ca 20 hours of hauling for a Coriolis, and 60-ish hours for an Orbis/Ocellus.

The CMDR I'm using doesn't have a FC and the one that does is out exploring. I really don't mind the amount I have to haul, it's the time restriction for a primary port that stresses me out. Definitely going something small next time as the primary, I can always build bigger ports later (without a time restriction) if I want to.

Sounds like you have the right idea. If you have limited time (job/social life/family etc.), start with an outpost, and build bigger things later when you want to.

Yeah, that's the plan going forward. When I first signed up I really didn't know what I was getting myself into.

I'm fortunate to have others helping me build the primary port this time around and it's currently at 66% with 2 weeks to go. Wouldn't have got this far without them, that's for sure.

as long as it's 16 ly away from some other inhabited system, the interest in colonization is extremely low for me.

combined with all of the other downsides to how this feature is implemented, it's going to be a long long time before i would care enough to space truck for the privilege of choosing where stations i have no additional powers over and have no benefit to me go.
