What Would Be Involved In Speed Running Elite Dangerous?

I don't mean steps like "own a copy of the game" or "install the game" etc.

I mean, if someone wanted to speed run ED (maybe people do already, but I don't think I've ever heard of or seen anyone talking about speed running ED) what steps would be considered part of it?

For example, if I was talking speed running GTA V, you'd tell me about each mission, or if we were talking about Super Mario World, we'd be talking about each level.
What parts of ED would we use to measure speed running it?
Is anyone speed running Elite Dangerous?
Is it even possible to speed run a game that doesn't technically have an end?

Honestly interested.

EDIT:
Starting to outline what would be in the list.
Elite rank in Combat, Trade and Exploration (CQC is a separate game)
Highest rank with Federation, Empire and Alliance
Unlock all engineers

Standard game goals would be the elite ranks, or triple elite. Something that others can replicate for a timed run to be meaningful.

When I started out I set myself a personal target of combat elite within a year to 're-earn' my Acornsoft badge (my avatar).

  1. Record Start Date and Time
  2. Engineer starting 'winder to include G5/Experimental upgrades for everything upgradeable - this will take a while - you can do this in solo mode if you'd like.
  3. Announce on forum the date and time that you will be appearing at Deciat (after you've completed the above)
  4. Insult/challenge gankers and their ilk on the forum and remind them when you will be at Deciat
  5. Fly to Deciat in your sidewinder equipped with an SRV. You must be in open mode.
  6. Evade/destroy gankers.
  7. Land at Felicity Farseer's base.
  8. Destroy everything that is destroyable at the base.
  9. Evade/destroy gankers after departure
  10. Return to Home base.
  11. Acquire either one of Anaconda, Corvette or the equivalent Empire ship. Sorry, I don't do business with those aristocratic scum and don't have a clue what their top of the line ship is.(NOTE: I don't care that they deal in slaves - I just don't like the nobility) . Oh yeah. I forgot the Alliance. Wait - no I didn't. The Alliance? Feh! 🤣
  12. Fully upgrade the ship acquired in goal 11 to G5 with all having an experimental of your choice. (It took me 3 years real time to get one - there are those however, that have posted ways to get one in less than a week)
Do all of that without getting turned into space dust and paying a rebuy ever. NOTE: If you get your atoms merged with the black - challenge over.

Congratulations - you're done.

Anyone want to start a pool on how long that would take?

No?

Have fun @Alien

PS: I couldn't complete the above even if my life depended on it. However based on some of the almost unbelievable claims I've read over the years posted by not a few players I'm pretty sure there are some who could.

I've had this idea for a speedrun floating around in the back of head for some time:

From clear save to having unlocked all engineers!

Such a run would cover most parts of Elite. I wouldn't want to do it myself, but that didn't stop me from thinking about some of the cornerstones:
  1. You need access to Sol and Achenar. So some mission board gameplay is required to unlock those systems and their engineers.
  2. You need to grab a meta-alloy to get an audience for Felicity.
  3. Other engineers want rare commodities.
  4. Exploration - i.e. long distance jumping - is covered by the necessary trips to Colonia and Witch Head
  5. Colonia would also unlock Palin's requirement of 5000ly
  6. Lori Jameson is probably the hardest. Shinrarta access requires an Elite rank which is rather easy with mining, but Lori wants a combat rank of 'dangerous'. Blasting through conflict zones? Or farming Thargoid scouts? In any case heavy engineering is required to have efficiency in farming combat rank.
  7. The Colonia and combat rank requirement need largely different ships and engineering. So it's not feasible to speed run with only one type of ship
Regulations would sensibly exclude help from other players, so
  • Solo mode mandatory
  • No docking or other interaction with fleet carriers
Even in a speedrun setup it would probably take dozens of hours. As I said, I don't dare to try it, but if someone wants to attempt it, I'm sure I'll tune in to streams and youtube videos ;)

i would probably work with Alec Turners excellent "how many of these have you tried?" lists:

... make an updated list of it, and than try to order them for a speedrun.

Elite is a sandbox, so you basically make your own goals.
You can speedrun those goals if you really want to.
As I understand the goal of speedrunning is to be fastest.
Make yourself a goal to quit.
Then quit.

Aside from making Elite or Triple Elite, or going from start to first Hydra kill, or the like, I am not sure what there is to speedrun. There is no "End Game" for Elite Dangerous. There is just late game content.
