Newcomer / Intro Whats a good first ship to buy?

I eventually want to start bounty hunting but it seems fighters/all ships are pretty expensive. What should be my next step to up my profit margin? a hauler or go right for the eagle and start hunting or get a mining laser and start mining? either way doesn't matter I like doing just about anything in this game, just wondering what the best route is... thanks!

IMHO the best idea would be to get a hauler and do trading in order to finally have the money to buy yourself a cobra together with some good equipment

This isnt the answer you seek, but it is the truest, best answer: Do whatever you feel like doing! Starter ships are cheap, and easily varied. Sounds like an Adder may be what you are looking for, able to multitask well, and cheaper than a Cobra.

My progression was a sidey to a hauler to a cobra. Currently I own a well kitted cobra for mission/bounty hunting, and a Lakon 6 for when I feel like trading. Eventually I will outfit a mining ship when I get around to trying my hand at prospecting!

Where do you find certain ships, im struggling to understand where to go to find certain goods other than just going there and seeing what stations have.

Finally, I can answer a question instead of asking one:) Go to System Map (next to Galaxy Map). Click on the stations and look for one with a Shipyard. Those stations sell ships:)

Audrah,

OP asked how to find what types of ships are sold at shipyards. Looking at the maps won't tell you that.

ED is kind of broken. Some of the premises are fatally flawed. You can't find out what ships are sold where in the game, among other things. Boggles the mind, ships can jump light years in a few seconds but the devs believe information never gets outside a station. Kind of bizarre really, if the internet has taught us anything it is that information wants to be free.

But in ED information is harder to get than NSA program information, which thanks to Snowdon is now widely known. ED needs a Snowdon.

The Eagle is a perfectly good ship to start bounty hunting in. Upgrade the power plant, power distributor and weapons (in that order or learn a valuable lesson in getting stranded in space on your first fight) and then the other systems and don't take on anything too big (Pythons, Anacondas etc.) and you should do fine.

Good luck Commander.

Information does want to be free but Governments hate freedom.

I chose the Adder as my first ship after the sidewinder. Reason? more cargo capacity than Hauler and you can fit it for combat as well.

I would agree the Adder would be a good next choice for what you appear to want to do. And for the reasons given. It can fight and haul. The hauling will allow you to make money to buy the gear you will want on the Adder for fighting. Good luck and have fun. :)

Ive not tried the adder but ive popped countless NPC ones using variations of sidewinder, eagle and viper. As mentioned above they are the camper van of space.

I started out with sidewinder and my freagle. I really like both of them, I bounty hunted and missioned both until I could afford to outfit both.

There is a post somewhere about the eagle, giving some advice about outfitting. The idea is you swap the shield with the cargo hold below it then you can install an 8ton cargo hold, choosing to keep your other cargo or install something else and keep your shield. Which means you can take some cargo missions if you find you need to pay some bounties

Although with the eagle the armour is very very weak once your shield has gone you are going to take a lot of damage very quickly. So fly in a way where they can't hit you, or use your pips and hold them at distance till you have full shield and then get in close and nail them. Cobras are like a barn door when you get inside them can't miss you can even choose where you want to hit them FSD, Cockpit etc. Vipers with a good pilot are a lot harder to take down.

Don't go after the high value assassination missions in your sidewinder though ......

I have actually gone back to my sidewinder as I'm saving cash to upgrade my Viper with high class equipment. I don't plan to trade my way up just use missions and bounty hunting. Im not using a fuel scoop in my viper as I have a interdictor in the place. So its more economical fuel wise to hunt in my eagle and my sidewinder (Also the replacement costs are cheaper as accidents do happen).

I would stick with your eagle until you can afford to outfit a viper, or just buy it keep it somewhere and add bits and pieces gradually to it. The eagle is cheap to repair, fuel and insure.

Eagle works wonders for me in bounty-hunting.

Pre-ordered and got a free Eagle (not expensive anyway, only 44,800 cred). Right now running it with maxed reactor, maxed power distributor and a gimballed cannon. Squishes Cobras like no tomorrow.
