What's a good FSD range for exploring?

Let's say you want to go exploring. Obviously you could strip your ship down to the bare minimums except for FSD and whatever gear is essential for scanning in order to maximize range.

But assuming you don't mind taking a more scenic route, what would you say is the minimum FSD range is to avoid dead ends? Obviously the closer to the rim you get, the greater that gets, but assuming within the majority of the galaxy and not the fringe.

I have done it fine with 14LY on a Clipper, this was before the 100LY route plotting, I could jump further but anything above 15 would sometimes not show up on the Nav panel, so it was easier to use an external route and plot short jumps.

Ideally you want 20LY+ to cover some regions. I took a Type-9 on a 4000LY trip to Orion via a whole bunch of Nebulae, it had a 18LY range, so at some points I had to take major detours.
