What's been your most memorable VR moment playing ED?

Hey,

I'm new to the VR party, but I'm absolutely loving what it brings to Elite. So I'm curious, what so far has been your best standout VR moment playing the game?

For me it would either be flying through a RES site and being terrified of these huge, very dangerous rocks rolling past the window, or just peering out the side of the SRV and feeling like I really was driving over the surface of another planet.

How about you? :)

Every time I hop in a ship I've never experienced in VR, I take some time to stand up and look around and absorb all of the details of the cockpit. There are still many ships I don't yet own, but I'm looking forward to sitting in each cockpit in VR. Just the other day, my buddy in Colonia invited me into his AspX and I was blown away by the view in that ship (and that's just the co-pilot seat!).

1st time i exited the coriolis in VR. it happened to be right next to an ELW so got the double whammy.

more recently however (just last night in fact) coming out of the thargoid base, getting shut down and seeing the big thargoid descent down and hovering just above me watching it scan my wingmate was also incredible.

For me it is probably the first time I landed on a planet and dropped into my SRV. I literally felt like an astronaut exploring a new world - it was amazing.

Planet surfaces could really do with some love - caves and real geological features would be awesome - everything is so beige and rounded atm...

Pretty much the first time I put the headset on and looked around the interior of the station... :) It was game changing for me.

Many other moments, flying slowly past a planet, driving an SRV and seeing a ringed gas giant hanging above me. These were impressive on a big screen, but in VR it's really quite wonderful.

And all this running the rift on a GTX960! I'm hoping to be wowed again when my new GTX1080 arrives later this week. :)

I know exactly what you mean. I jumped into my Vulture last night and didn't realise how large the canopy was! I keep looking back at the doorway in my Python scared that one day I'm going to hear it hiss open behind me and a Thargoid or something is going to come through it while I'm in flight.

I'd be curious how you find the GTX1080. I'm on a GTX980 at the moment and it wouldn't take much persuasion for me to upgrade...

I went from a MSI GTX 980Ti 6GB Gaming to a TitanX and saw little improvement. There was some, obviously, but you need a logarithmic increase in GPU horsepower to get any real difference. VR will drive any GPU to it's limit. Here's a response to the same question in regards to SLI.

To be honest, if you are happy with the 980Ti, stick with it. The 1080ti is a good card and I'm not knocking it. It will perform better then your 980Ti, but you'll see little improvement overall in VR.

I had a MSI 980Ti and went to a Titan X-P. While I have better performance with the Titan, what I see on the HMD is quite close to the 980ti. Performance in VR is essentially logarithmic in nature. Simply put, to get 2x performance you need 4x the card horsepower. The Titan X is 64% better than a 980Ti according to some sites. Yet, that let me go from 1.5 to 2.0 in SS settings and slight tweaks to AA and that's about it.

The 1080ti is comparable to the Titan X-P and if you get one, you won't be disappointed, but it really isn't necessary if you have a decent machine and a 980Ti.

Edit: What I would love to see is NVIDIA and Vive coming up with an SLI arrangement where you can have two 1080Ti's, one for the left eye and one for the right. That would rock and should give you 90FPS pretty much everywhere assuming your CPU can keep up.

Well, the 960 is below minimum spec for VR, and I have read (in researching the 1080) that it was in fact the weakest of the 900 series cards, so I expect that the 1080 will make a significant difference to me. :)

My current settings are pretty much low on everything, with SS at .85 and HMD quality at 1.1. It's certainly playable if a bit fuzzy, but after a while it starts to judder (is the only way I can describe it) when you move your head, and of course frame rates are very low.

I started my vr adventure with a gtx 670. It was with dk2 mind you. Upgrading to the gtx 980 made a big difference

Way too many to mention, have to say my top experience was just the other night, sat in a Cobra MKIII multicrew with my girlfriend who is currently half way across the world. Windows iced up and slowly drifting near the GNOSIS megaship whilst having a chat and a drink above an Earth world. Was a very surreal experience, never thought I would be able to be experience VR like this in my lifetime.

Have to say the CV1 Mic works very well (Still don't know where the mic actually is)

EVERY MOMENT IN VR!!

Oh, the CV1 mic is (apparently) built into the headset. Nice and logical, when you think about it. I first thought (by the small holes in the top) that there were mics in the sensor units.

Used to do a bit of exploring but haven't for some time. In the meanwhile I got myself a Rift. Absolutely stunned by everything in VR. Then I decided to explore again so dusted off my trusty Asp X.

Just flying the Asp was a real WOW! moment. That cockpit is fantastic in VR.

I did the same thing last night! Seeing a fiery star under your feet as you fuel scoop is fantastic. I'm really glad that the ASP Explorer offers such a large canopy to enjoy the views. Good, sensible ship design there.

First time I flew my tricked out Viper into combat in VR, slightly claustrophobic cockpit after my Clipper, bit off more than I could chew and started getting beat badly up by an Elite Cobra. I decide to try and outrun or out jump the fiendish enemy and start my escape procedure, full pips to engines, boosting away fast whilst winding up my jump drive - by the time I heard the magic words 3 - 2 -1 my cockpit was literally on fire around me, sparks - flames - smoke, part of my dash was on fire, smoke coming from behind me, it was awesome, the level of immersion was so great I actually experienced a moment of true "presence" with a very real and urgent "I gotta get out of here now" feeling. Despite the fact that I was actually sitting in my office, in my mind I was in a burning space ship, which was about to explode. I think ED should add a proper eject sequence in these situations which leaves you tumbling in the silence of space for a while before you respawn at port. Sad thing though, I find playing on my monitor just is not the same game anymore, ED VR for all its shortcomings with resolution etc is simply incredible.

Love it. Fantastic account. And I totally agree with you about the end / eject sequences. I was thinking how awesome it would be to stay within the ship but then see it crack and blow-up around you. Leaving you for a few seconds strapped to your seat rolling and floating among the debris of your ship for a few seconds before the respawn kicks in.

But it's always cost versus benefit in game dev; that would be fantastic for VR users but likely wouldn't add much to a monitor experience. Here's hoping VR experience becomes more of a commercial obsession!

Yeah I think every Elite Dangerous player owes it to themselves to experience the game in VR at least once in their life, just to see what they are missing! I remember loading into ED the first time wearing a headset, and just sitting there in that first options screen, with the ship on your right and an SRV in front of you. I think I must have just sat there in amazement for 15 minutes looking around thinking OMG, where has this been all my life!

My Hotas has an issue that it will glitch and pull all the way left or right. Well on my way out of the mail slot it decided to pull hard to the right and after I hit the inside wall I tumbled end over end back into the station. Seemed like forever before it came to a stop. I don't think it would have been as hair raising if I wasn't playing in vr. Same thing happens when I flip the srv.

Other great moments...first neutron star or ringed gas giant. First time I sat up and looked down the hood of the ship. I still like doing that. Circling an outpost before landing.

Exploring a Thargoid base by SRV... The artwork, sound and scenery is some of the best alien designs i have ever wittnessed. The mood it creates with those creepy sounds, green mist, those strange organic structures and the sheer size of everything... In this area one self is the most alien thing. Totally out of place in the best way possible.

Definitely something i plan to do again, when 2.4 hits.

I don't know anything about the Thargoid's. Is there a quest or mission line which takes you to their base? Would love to see it!

Indeed the SRV experience in VR is spectacular isn't it. It feels like you're really there. It's almost as if you could touch the wheels.

We have a mic?!

My fantastic moments - well there are many but a few are stuck in my mind.

In a station where I had to duck in my head because another ship just flew over me as I was exiting the station.

Next is flying fast in a canyon and glimpsing to the sides to check out the large rock you almost slammed into.

Then like Brandon 31 said, all the smokes and sparks around your cockpit, it really brings the game to life. In fact this is my favourite demo when I have friends over.. I teach them to fly and I ask them to hyperspace jump to a nearby star. And I gleefully watch them panic as the ship overheats near the destination star as they haven't realized they would have had to maneuvre out of the way of the star when you drop out of hyperspace.

Then my favourite serene scenario I posted before in another thread - I was in a Cobra seating on the left pilot seat. Then as I was leaving a station I looked to my right and the sun was just coming up from behind the dark planet. I turned to the passenger seat to say "look! What a sunrise" but realized that the seat was empty, my wife was not there with me in the ship, and I was just inside a headset sitting in the computer room of my flat.
