What's changed?

Greetings commanders! It's been a while. I'm interested with jumping back into the pilot seat after a good long while and I want to know how much has changed and what content I can start sinking my teeth into. I stopped playing Elite: Dangerous back when Powerplay first dropped, I was getting increasingly frustrated with the lack of new things to do and the repetitiveness of every activity; Mainly Kill missions since it was always Accept mission > Fly to USS > Speak to neutral NPC get location of target > Fly to USS in new area > Kill target and cash in. It always played the same every time. The game was expansive with lots to do but had no depth. I eventually lost interest but that was then and this is now.

What has changed since powerplay to present? I know CQC and the first landing expansion was released which allows landing on moons and buggies but I'm not going to buy that until I feel I can get a good understanding on what has been added and improved upon. I don't want to splash cash on new content if the base game has been left unchanged.

So I ask what's new? Can I get some variety out of my kill missions? Can we finally ferry passengers giving the Orca a purpose at long last or is development focused more on pushing out new expansions rather than depth to the game's current activities?

In case you are wondering why I'm asking instead of seeing for myself the game is going to take a while to download so it's faster to ask than actually download and jump in. [big grin]

Thanks in advance for help!

So many things have changed.

I suggest getting into the game, getting your cheapest ship out and look at the game for some time. A lot of things changed so significantly, trying to tell you here without you first having a go at yourself will leave a lot of dots to be connected later.

Therefore, don't be shy. Be ready for an AI a lot more dangerous for the top three ranks. Check out some missions. Then come back to ask about the things your are confused at.

BTW, Horizons is becoming more important after the latest update. It now makes the game a lot richer than it has been before.

prepare to be bombarded with links up0on links, lists of patch notes going back to Day 1........
.
I stopped playing around PowerPlay too.......It might affect your feelings if you play solo or open....if you like PvP you might enjoy it as it is all about weapon and other upgrades for your ship......but if you are in to exploring, mining or passenger trips......or solo play....there is nothing new in 2.1.............Like PowerPlay, it is another feature you can "Ignore" so some say............the core game play has not changed at all......just more hoops to jump through......

You are joking, aren't you?

PS: Just a few changes from 2.1/1.6

- ATC
- USS scanning
- new & improved missions
- bonus missions
- faction progression and persistant NPCs
- NPC faces
- ice mining
- loot (materials, data)
- crafting
- scavenger hunt scanning
- new modules
- handcrafted / unique stations
- new weapons
- surprise missions
- better security response
- new commodities
- better graphics
- better AI
- collapsible control options
- more graphic options
- bookmarks
- filter for system states
- better BGS representation
- shiping lanes
- nav beacon scanning
- new reputation rank
- general tweaks & fixes
- new dropout point for supercruise
- new mechanic to find mission related USS & POI
- no more docking at hostile stations
- new outiftting screen
- new missions screen
- cockpit clock
- tire tracks
- probably a few more I don't remember

But the problem is that some people just don't like ED. If you don't like the game you will not have fun with it, regardless how many patches, improvements and features they add.

Does any or most of that require the expansion? I'm hesitant since Destiny by Bungie released their expansion and made all of the base game redundant, stopped updating or adding anything new to the base game to push people into buying the expansion.

I really enjoy ED, I got it back in Beta and have logged a good few hundred hours into the game. I'm not unhappy with my purchase I'm just hesitant to pay more money if the Developers have no intention on focusing on expanding or improving base game activities. I care a lot about the ethics of a company when it comes to spending money.

Edited the post, the blue ones are Horizons specific. I suggest you just install 1.6 again, they put more work in the base game than they put into the expansion. If you like it and think they have deserved more money buy the expansion. Otherwise just wait for the next major patch in a few months.

PS
There is nothing wrong with buying Horizons later when it's on a sale. I am sure that you'll get it for 10€ sometime this year. FDEV decided to go with early access, it's just fair to buy it when it's ready. It would be stupid to waste money on something you don't like and then complain about it on the forum, just wait until you can be sure that it's worth your money.
