What's it with the beard boom ?

I am noticing a beard boom in that last couple of years where more and more people going chewbacca chin.

Anyone know what started/continues to cause this ?

By the way I am beard neutral in that I have no like or dislike of it and I wish this to be not about that, but about what started it all...

Also depends on the time of year too. A friend of mine looks like a bear during winter as it keeps his face warm whilst riding his motorcycle.

I haven't bothered shaving since I started my Christmas leave at the weekend, so I'm currently somewhere between Obi Wan Kenobi and Gandalf. Usually totally beardless, though, and have been vaguely amused by their current popularity.

The Planet Coaster Launch was in Shoreditch, London which is pretty much Hipster Central.:O

More beards than a Brian Blessed Fan convention.

I felt extremley underbearded walking through on the way to the launch...

I blame Ed.

You should try going to an archaeology conference. Unbearded, and not wearing a checkered shirt, I stand out like I've wandered into the wrong place.

There are number of reasons:

Hipsters? Fashions rotate in cycles with time; I remember hipsters in the 1970s. Those guys were branded dirty and lazy and so sporting a beard, just was not done.

There was a charity awareness thing a while ago. Something about male cancer.

Also: With the world just going to hell and descent common sense, just being thrown out of the window; many have asked, what is the point in grooming and making the effort to look their best. Just to look like, just another slime-ball out to rip everybody off.

Above, someone mentioned, the cost of shaving has sky rocketed over the last few years. What we used to do with an old Bowie knife and cold water years ago, now requires 5 blades, to be replaced every second shave.

Myself; I have always had hair on my face, it is just the way I am. Mostly worn in a form of Van Dyke, but often these days, laziness just lets it grow and grow. If anyone mentions it, I just say that I am growing it as a mark of respect, to my brothers in Syria and that shuts everyone up, instantly. Anyway; I can't be grooming too much, if I am doing that, what chance do other mere mortals, stand with the ladies?
