Whats new compared to the original Elite?

I just started yesterday and I'm in wonder, just doing tutorials and stuff and can't believe I'm playing Elite again.

I'm curious about new gameplay mechanics over the original Elite, someone knows the answer?

station variety, missions, faction as well as local reputation, exploration, 3 different types of progress (trade, combat & exploration) more ships, multi-player, galaxy size + single galaxy, permit restricted systems, ability to dump cargo as well as scoop it, rare commodities, etc. etc. etc.
 
In a nutshell, Elite Dangerous combines most of the features of the earlier Elite and Frontier games, but with significantly more sophisticated graphics and sound. It also brings new features such as the ability to progress in more than one career path, and of course it is a multiplayer game.

Not every aspect of the earlier games is included, and some aspects (the flight mechanics for example)are based on, but not identical to, any of the earlier games. There is also content yet to be delivered and development is promised for some time to come.
 
Biggest changes from the original Elite (some of which were in Frontier in some form):
- The galaxy is now based on the real-world galaxy (and is more 3D and accurate than in Frontier)
- There are multi-star systems, multiple planets, planets with moons, planets with rings, black holes...
- There are factions that control systems and offer missions (and your actions change their influence, unlike in Frontier)
- In addition to trading and combat, you can make money mining and exploring
- You can own multiple ships
- Market prices change according to the trading going on (NPC & player)
And a few other things.

Selling this game as multiplayer is borderline criminal.

If you are wondering about the gameplay and want to get a better insight I strongly recommend watching some streamers on Twitch. I don't know your timezone, but here are a few suggestions. Watching various streamers gives you some idea about the different aspects of the game as well as the scope of the game :)

Ty, Im already flying, is that I'm just mostly doing tutorial as I'm afraid of crashing or something and losing my ship before I have money for the insurance, but I'm getting confidence enough to start.

Wouldn't worry too much about that. The insurance at start is very low. You can check how much credits is required to pay for insurance on your right hand panel (#4 key). It will be listed under your Commander name.

Of course, the insurance cost will go up as you buy more expensive ships and/or install more expensive modules to your ship.

A simple guideline from EVE Online: "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" ... so if at any point your credit balance is lower than the cost of insurance, then just downgrade some modules or switch to a cheaper ship until you increased your credit balance again.

As for crashing, as long as you have shields up you don't die from crashing unless you boost into the side of a station ... plenty of videos about people doing that :)

yup, this feels more like the sequel to the original Elite than Frontier/FirstContact did. Ok, it's 30years later, but the core gameplay feels 'purer' for now than the other games. Maybe not a bad thing, start with the space sim working 'just right' then add the landing/aliens/whatever later knowing the core space game is always there.

Even if you don't have insurance money, you are always entitled to a free Sidewinder and 1,000cr.
 
Ah yeah but I have the option to start with the MK III and I think insurance is about 18k and I'm starting with 1000 only.
 
ED sits somewhere between the original Elite and Frontier. I'm an old timer so i'm okay with it (so long as it gets built on) but aside from the graphics and the online component i didn't want anyway and the game barely supports, there's nothing 21st century about the game-play. Take out the online and the graphics and it's from somewhere around 1987-88.

I'm having fun but there's a huge element of nostalgia in this. For me it's way too 'feature-thin' at the moment.

You play with other people, so it's a multiplayer game ... you're playing in a massive world with all the other players in the same universe so it also very nicely fits the definition of MMO.
 
Back on topic.

It's Elite. Its Frontier. It's way shinier.

My favourite moment so far - When I first had my canopy blown out. Silently beautiful. Getting my crippled ship back to dock safely ranked almost as high.

It's Epic.
 
Technically it is multi-player... but with 400B stars it's going to take an awful lot of players to have any real interaction :) I mean they could have 400B players and still give every player their own star. LOL. When I first played I played solo thinking I wanted to learn to play without getting mauled by other players... then I started playing open when I got the hang of it and found that I was still playing alone. (thought it would be a new game.. didn't realize my solo game would be the same as my multi-player game... they should be separate but that's another thread).

I never played frontier/first contact but I did spend hours and hours and hours playing the original elite and I loved it. This game feels the same... one major difference was that in the original elite to cover the distance to a planet/space station you would do "jumps".. where each jump would instantly reduce the distance until you got close enough that you couldn't jump any more and you would just fly normally. This mechanic has been nicely replaced with super cruise. I actually like the interdiction system here.. combat is a bit different too. In the original elite it was not unusual to be attacked by 4 ships at a time, and you could often have 2-3 of tehm dead before they were more than dots on your screen (if you had the good lasers). In this game , so far I've only had to fight one on one but the fights are a lot more intense and last longer (partially because I still have stock weapons... kills are slow).
 
the ranking is also different... in Elite I only killed like 2 ships to get from harmless to mostly harmless. I've killed quite a few ships now, ranked from harmless all the way up to master and I'm still ranked harmless. I'm not sure how they measure that... if it is a measure of bounties collected or number of ships destroyed.
